Near Northside
Suburban Neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana
Marion County 46202, 46205, 46208
Homes range from historic to brand-new
From houses built in the 19th century to brand-new homes built on old lots, Near Northside has a wide array of housing styles and prices. Ranches and bungalows can range from $130,000-310,000. Colorfully painted Foursquares and other two-story houses range from $250,000 for some historic homes to $1.3 million for a new build. The median price on the Near Northside is $405,000. More than anywhere else in the city, carriage houses are a common sight, providing a potential income stream for homebuyers through long- or short-term rentals. “It’s part of the property, people don’t parcel them off,” Kadhum says. “The most common is a two-car garage with either a studio or one bedroom apartment attached.”MLK Park remembers key moment in Indianapolis history
Near Northside’s largest park commemorates a watershed moment. Robert F. Kennedy was in the neighborhood campaigning for President on the night of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968, and Kennedy chose to break the devastating news to a predominantly African American crowd. His impromptu speech and expression of grief, credited with maintaining a sense of peace in Indianapolis during one of the most tumultuous weeks in American history, is commemorated with the Landmark for Peace Memorial at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The sculpture symbolizes what Kennedy and King strived to achieve for racial justice before both their lives were cut short. MLK Memorial Park also features a swimming pool, playground, basketball court and community garden. In Herron-Morton, the well-manicured Herron-Morton Place Park features a playground, swing sets and multiple benches shaded by tree canopies.Herron High among Indy's top schools
Neighborhood students can attend Herron High School, which earns an A-plus grade on Niche and is the top-rated charter high school in Indianapolis. It is also rated the No. 2 school for the arts in Indiana. K-8 students are zoned to attend Center for Inquiry School 27, and Indianapolis Public School with a C-rating. The Oaks Academy, an A-plus rated Christian school with an emphasis on providing a classical education to students from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, serves K-5 students on the Near Northside. Oaks Academy also has a middle school in nearby Martindale-Brightwood.Easy access to a wide range of events
Every April 4 and June 6, the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative Cultural Visitors Center at MLK Park hosts events to commemorate the anniversaries of King and Kennedy's assassinations. In Herron-Morton, Epilogue Players and Footlite Musicals are neighboring theatre companies who perform multiple shows each year at the Hedback Community Theatre. Near Northside residents are also just three miles away from games and events at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium and Victory Field.Friendly on foot, with a hospital to boot
Near Northside receives a walk score of 83/100 and bike score of 70/100. “You see kids walking to school in the morning,” Kadhum says. The Monon Trail, which runs 25 miles downtown to north of suburban Carmel, runs along the neighborhood's eastern boundary. There are also Indy Go bus routes along Meridian St., Delaware St., 16th St. and College Ave. Interstate 65, which leads 180 miles northwest to Chicago, forms the neighborhood’s southern boundary. IU Health Methodist Hospital, located in the neighborhood's southwest corner, is the Near Northside's largest employer.Diverse menus provide some of Indy's best eating
Tinker Street, located on the 16th Street boundary between Herron-Morton and Old Northside, features a rotating seasonal menu and was named one of USA Today’s eight best places to eat in the Midwest. Yet no American president has eaten there yet. That distincton belongs to Kountry Kitchen in Kennedy-King, a soul food restaurant frequented by out-of-towners and locals alike. Dubbed “the best soul food ever” by Shaquille O’Neal, Kountry Kitchen also serves more than 2,000 meals for the needy every Christmas. Along the 22nd Street corridor, options vary from coffee and cocktail spot Gather 22 to the formal (Bocca Modern Italian) or a laid-back modern diner (Baby’s). Other neighborhood favorites include Lincoln Square Pancake House in Meridian-Highland and Pure-trition Juice and Smoothie Bar in Kennedy-King. The popular Massachusetts Avenue entertainment district, about a mile from the center of the neighborhood, can also be reached on foot. There is one grocery store in the neighborhood – a Kroger on 16th St. -- as well as Needler’s Market and a Whole Foods nearby.Different parts of neighborhood have different concerns
The southern half of the neighborhood is the noisier half thanks to its proximity to I-65 as well as ambulance and helicopter traffic at the hospital. The flip side? Flooding is less of a concern than it is in the northwest part of the neighborhood – Meridian-Highland and Fall Creek Place – which are in the Fall Creek flood zone.
