Riverside
Suburban Neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana
Marion County 46202, 46208
Pre-war homes joined by an increasing number of new builds
Almost three-quarters of homes here were built before 1939, and the styles still exude the neighborhood’s historic essence. The single-family homes that line the streets in Riverside run on the smaller side, says Van Braeckel, with traditional ranch-style houses, American Foursquares and bungalows the most common. Homes are typically under 2,000 square feet and range between $100,000 and 325,000. There is also a growing influx of contemporary custom houses built on established lots since 2020. These newer houses sell for between $205,000 and $375,000.Riverside Park is the heart of the neighborhood
Riverside Park is one of the highlights of the Indianapolis park system. The expansive park features a boat launch, playground, playing fields, tennis complex, basketball courts, indoor aquatic center, outdoor waterslides and splash pad. “You’ll see many people barbequing and hanging out in the park,” Van Braeckel says. “And it’s a hidden gem for pickleball since there aren’t many places to play in Indianapolis." The nearly 5-mile-long White River Trail runs alongside the park. The park’s Thomas Taggart Memorial Amphitheater is home to the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company. There are also two golf courses that hug the riverfront – South Grove Golf Course in Riverside, and Coffin Golf Course just across the river.Herron-Riverside High a top-rated Indiana charter school
Parents have multiple school options in Riverside. Global Prep Academy at Riverside 44 is an English and Spanish bilingual kindergarten through eighth grade school with faculty members from 17 different countries. Global Prep receives a C-minus rating on Niche. Cold Spring School serves K-8 students with a STEM focus, and also earns a C-minus. Liberty Grove School at Elder Diggs 42 is an unrated IPS charter school for grades K through 6. C-plus rated Crispus Attucks High School, known for being the alma mater of NBA legend Oscar Robertson, is the nearest IPS high school. A-minus-rated public charter school Herron-Riverside High is in the neighborhood. Herron-Riverside is the No. 3-ranked charter school in Indiana. Two colleges are also just outside the neighborhood – Marian University is just across the White River to the west, and IU Indianapolis is just across Fall Creek to the south.Only 3 miles from the Indianapolis 500
Riverside is 3 miles away from Indy’s biggest annual event: the Indianapolis 500. Held on Memorial Day weekend, the race brings more than 300,000 fans to Indianapolis Motor Speedway in suburban Speedway each year, making it one of the largest single-day sporting events in the world.Close to Interstate 65 road trips
The northern edge of the neighborhood is less than a mile from Interstate 65, although it is slightly more than a mile to the nearest ramp off Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. I-65 leads 150 miles northwest to Gary, where it connects with I-90 and I-94 to Chicago. Eskenazi Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children are each just across Fall Creek from the neighborhood. Indianapolis International Airport is about 12 miles from Riverside. Like much of Indianapolis, Riverside is primarily a car-dependent neighborhood. However, public transportation is available with IndyGo bus stops along Harding Street. The AMP food hall re-energizes neighborhood
New shops and restaurants in Riverside also bring new life into the neighborhood. “A lot of effort is being put into reviving the social scene,” Van Braeckel says, noting that the 16 Tech Innovation District in the south end of the neighborhood is especially a growing hub. The cluster of buildings that makes up the 50-acre community is home to residential, commercial and co-working spaces. Its culinary heart is The AMP, a food hall and an artisan marketplace that features local vendors like Bull Grill Handmade Burgers and The Food Architect Natural Drink and Sea Moss Bar. Another local favorite for dining and gathering is Guggman Haus Brewery, which Van Braeckel says is a place many folks, including herself, enjoy. “They just have the best food and beers in a super family-friendly and puppy-friendly spot.” A downtown Kroger location, nearly 3 miles away, is one of the closest grocery stores.Churches a common sight in Riverside
Faith plays an important role in the lives of many Riverside residents. There are more than a half-dozen houses of worship in the neighborhood.
