Tree-lined streets near one of Indy's biggest parks
Aptly named Riverside hugs the White River along the northwestern collar of Indianapolis. Though less than 3 miles from downtown, the diverse neighborhood has a dense suburban feel – no doubt aided by the 860-acre presence of Riverside Park, which is Indy’s second-largest public park. “Riverside is ideal if you want to get in close to the city without being directly in it,” says Tatiana Van Braeckel, a broker and Realtor with Maywright Property Co. “It’s an expanding area that people like because of its proximity to downtown Indianapolis and the affordability of family homes.”
Pre-war homes joined by an increasing number of new builds
Almost three-quarters of homes here were built before 1939, and the styles still exude the neighborhood’s historic essence. The single-family homes that line the streets in Riverside run on the smaller side, says Van Braeckel, with traditional ranch-style houses, American Foursquares and bungalows the most common. Homes are typically under 2,000 square feet and range between $100,000 and 325,000. There is also a growing influx of contemporary custom houses built on established lots since 2020. These newer houses sell for between $205,000 and $375,000.

The AMP food hall re-energizes neighborhood
New shops and restaurants in Riverside also bring new life into the neighborhood. “A lot of effort is being put into reviving the social scene,” Van Braeckel says, noting that the 16 Tech Innovation District in the south end of the neighborhood is especially a growing hub. The cluster of buildings that makes up the 50-acre community is home to residential, commercial and co-working spaces. Its culinary heart is The AMP, a food hall and an artisan marketplace that features local vendors like Bull Grill Handmade Burgers and The Food Architect Natural Drink and Sea Moss Bar. Another local favorite for dining and gathering is Guggman Haus Brewery, which Van Braeckel says is a place many folks, including herself, enjoy. “They just have the best food and beers in a super family-friendly and puppy-friendly spot.” A downtown Kroger location, nearly 3 miles away, is one of the closest grocery stores.

Riverside Park is the heart of the neighborhood
Riverside Park is one of the highlights of the Indianapolis park system. The expansive park features a boat launch, playground, playing fields, tennis complex, basketball courts, indoor aquatic center, outdoor waterslides and splash pad. “You’ll see many people barbequing and hanging out in the park,” Van Braeckel says. “And it’s a hidden gem for pickleball since there aren’t many places to play in Indianapolis." The nearly 5-mile-long White River Trail runs alongside the park. The park’s Thomas Taggart Memorial Amphitheater is home to the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company. There are also two golf courses that hug the riverfront – South Grove Golf Course in Riverside, and Coffin Golf Course just across the river.
