South Emerson
Homes reflect different eras of growth
South Emerson once felt like where the suburbs met the farm rather than where the suburbs meet the city, developing slowly over the decades. Subdivisions could consist of mid-century ranches, 1970s split-levels, or contemporary brick-and-vinyl siding homes built between the 1990s and 2020s. “With Indianapolis being a popular place to buy due to our favorable property tax, housing prices have increased,” Forrest says. “There have been loads of new development.” Condos in the neighborhood range from $155,000-$265,000. Most houses range between $150,000 and $700,000. The neighborhood median price is about $275,000. Higher-end custom contemporary houses are found in the Greystone subdivision, where sales range from $500,000 to $1.1 million.Emerson Avenue splits Perry and Franklin school districts
Emerson Avenue doesn’t just provide the neighborhood with its name; it forms a key boundary. Homes east of Emerson are in Franklin Township, and homes west of Emerson are in Perry Township. Students in Perry Township attend Jeremiah Gray Elementary, which receives a B-plus grade from Niche. They’ll move on to B-rated Southport Middle and B-plus rated Southport High. There are four schools serving students in the Franklin Township's half of the neighborhood. Kindergarten through third graders attend B-rated Arlington Elementary. Fourth through sixth graders head to B-plus rated Edgewood Intermediate before attending B-rated Franklin Central Junior High. They’ll then move on to A-minus rated Franklin Central High. A-minus rated Lutheran High and A-rated Roncalli Catholic are also popular options for neighborhood residents. In addition, more than 250 students attend Gray Road Christian School, an elementary school attached to the neighborhood's Gray Road Baptist Church.Car-friendly, but other transportation a challenge
Interstate 65 puts downtown Indianapolis in quicker reach than its 9-mile distance might indicated. South Emerson is also about a 15-mile drive east of Indianapolis International Airport on I-465. But the neighborhood is not ideal for getting around on foot, and has a 27 of 100 Bike Score and an 8 of 100 Walk Score. The IndyGo 16 bus route runs towards downtown along Emerson Avenue. A bus trip downtown can take nearly an hour compared to around 20 minutes by car.Local favorites mix with plentiful chain options
South Emerson’s proximity to two interstates also makes it an appealing location for shopping centers. But there are some local gems in addition to the chain stores and restaurants. Fujiyama Steakhouse, opened here in 1977, was one of the first restaurants to introduce Japanese cuisine to Indianapolis. The simple setting of Egg Roll #1 is one of Indy’s most popular spots for pho. Though relatively new, Paradise Mx’s authentic Mexican ice creams and desserts have quickly become a neighborhood favorite. And Whiskey Business Burgers Bourbon Brews vast selection of each item listed in its name makes it an ideal spot to catch the Colts, Pacers, Hoosiers or Boilermakers on TV. Neighborhood residents also have multiple grocery options, including Aldi, Kroger, Meijer, Target and Walmart.Tolin-Akeman the lone neighborhood park
Outdoor recreation is sparse in South Emerson. Tolin-Akeman Park, a 5.5-acre greenspace with a picnic shelter and playground, is the lone park in the neighborhood. That’s in line with Indianapolis as a whole, where only 5% of land is park space compared to the national median of 15%. And though Indy has a reputation as a golf-friendly city, there are no courses within 4 miles of the neighborhood.Options for family bonding abound
There are multiple recreational centers in and near South Emerson. Greatimes Family Fun Park is true to Indy’s racing spirt with three go-kart tracks in addition to two 18-hole mini-golf courses and a two-story arcade. Combat Ops offers laser tag, nerf-style tag, dodgeball, mini-golf and other family-friendly games in its indoor setting. Sky Zone Trampoline Park features multiple trampolines as well as American Ninja Warrior- and American Gladiators-inspired challenge games.Noise and flooding are potential factors
The sounds of traffic are a factor in South Emerson. Emerson Avenue is a busy four-lane road, and a pair of interstates border the neighborhood. Two minor streams – Little Buck Creek and Carson Creek – cut through the neighborhood and carry potential flood risks.
