Bear Creek
Outdoor fun and the Heritage Center
There are a couple of parks in and around the neighborhood. Residents can head to the West Irving Aquatic Center to go for a swim or splash around the waterpark. It is an outdoor park that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It is next to West Park, which houses the Georgia Farrow Recreation Center and its gym, as well as a basketball court and sandlot. “West Park has a really interesting playground,” Vasquez says. The park was renovated in 2021 and is designed for children of all ages and abilities. There is an outdoor music station with drums and a xylophone, accessible swings and what Vasquez describes as an outdoor “quiet zone” - a Plexiglas shelter where kids can go if they need some space but want to play. Towne Lake Park is a scenic park less than 1 mile away. “If you’re an outdoor runner, that's where I would choose to run,” Vasquez says. “There’s a lot to see, a lot of wildlife by the lake.” For an in-depth exploration of the neighborhood’s history, folks can explore the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center. It is named after Jackie Mae Townsell, the first Black councilwoman to serve the City of Irving, who was elected for nine terms.Juneteenth Celebration held in Bear Creek
For over 20 years, the City of Irving and the West Irving Improvement Society have celebrated Juneteenth in Bear Creek. The community comes together for a weekend of music, food and fellowship that celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history and its impact on the residents of Irving today. While the 2024 festivities were held at Heritage Park, the hope is that Juneteenth 2025 will return to the Georgia Farrow Recreation Center in Bear Creek. “Even as popular as our Juneteenth event has become, we don’t want to move it out of that area,” Vasquez says. “We want it to honor that space and honor the history and honor the story of this neighborhood and its impact on Irving, the history of North Texas and the history of the state itself.”Popular eateries and shops in Bear Creek
While many of the restaurants in and around Bear Creek are chains, such as IHOP and Olive Garden, there are some local eateries in Irving's downtown, called the Heritage District, about 3 miles away. Vasquez recommends Padaek, which serves Thai food and bubble tea. At Villa’s Grill, a Brazilian Steakhouse, patrons can order from an all-you-can-eat menu, which includes 13 cuts of meat. Folks can get groceries at Walmart, and Kroger is less than 2 miles away. There are outlet and discount stores, like Lowe’s Outlet Store, in the northern part of the neighborhood. Irving Mall is less than 1 mile outside of Bear Creek. Shoppers can explore major retailers like Macy’s and Dillard’s before grabbing a bite at the food court.Modern homes set in older neighborhood
While Bear Creek’s history dates back over 150 years, the homes that line the streets were built after 1980. Oak and ash trees dot the front lawns, shading the sidewalks from the sun. Driveways often lead to one- to two-car garages, although the roads have ample space for street parking. “With all of the new construction, they have more modern styles than the original, more country homes,” says Realtor Dee Hawkins with Blue Crown Properties, who has worked in Irving for almost 30 years. Ranch styles and neo-traditional houses fill most of the neighborhood. Three- to four-bedroom prices tend to fall between $275,000 and $450,000. There are some manufactured homes in the southern part, which typically cost $100,000 to $150,000. Many residents rent, with monthly rent for a one- to two-bedroom ranging from $1,000 to $1,200. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) identifies part of Bear Creek as a Special Flood Hazard Area. “It floods more than it ever has,” Hawkins says. “Now, it starts raining, and everyone wants to hunker down, just in case.” Flood insurance is recommended for all homeowners and required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage. FEMA also says the area has a very high risk of tornados, although most home insurance policies cover wind damage.Major highway connects Irving to Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex
Bear Creek is car-dependent. State Route 183 acts as Bear Creek’s northern border, connecting the community and the rest of Irving to Dallas, about 14 miles away, and Fort Worth, about a 23-mile drive. There is some public transportation; DART bus routes run along North Belt Line Road and West Pioneer Road. The Trinity Railway Express also connects Dallas and Fort Worth, with a stop in the Heritage District. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is about 4 miles away. The closest emergency room is in Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, about a 3-mile drive. Home Depot and Target are less than 1 mile away.Elementary and middle school in Bear Creek
Bear Creek is part of Irving Independent School District. Davis Elementary School is rated C from Niche and is in the southern part of the neighborhood, next to West Park. Lady Bird Johnson Middle School receives a C-plus and is also located in Bear Creek. Irving High School earns a B-minus and offers several career and technical education (CTE) programs, including business management. The school employs students enrolled in CTE courses to provide public services, such as catering and photography, so that students get hands-on experience.
