Slaterville Springs sits on the banks of Six Mile Creek, about 8 miles east of Ithaca. It is a small rural community, without a stoplight to be found. The hamlet’s post office opened in 1823 and for several decades, a handful of textile mills were the town’s main industry. However, in 1871 a local doctor claimed that Slaterville’s magnetic spring waters were found to have curative properties. Soon after, tourists arrived, seeking the therapeutic benefits of those waters. The locale remained a popular destination until the 1920s, when both the spa goers and the textile mills left for greener pastures. Today, a short and quiet stretch of New York Highway 79 serves as the town’s main road with a few short side streets that have a handful of houses. The once-bustling hamlet now consists of little more than perhaps 100 homes, a small market and the 130-year-old St. Thomas Episcopal Church. “Slaterville is perfect for people who want to live in the country,” says Realtor Karen Hollands of Howard Hanna Realty in Ithaca. “It’s close to Cornell University but still retains property values that are attainable for the average home buyer.”
Slaterville Springs homes have large lots
The limited number of homes in Slaterville Springs are mostly found along NY 79, also known as Slaterville Springs Road. Homes here sit on large lots, usually over an acre. Hollands says there is no municipal water in Slaterville, so homes are on well water and septic systems. Housing options consist of farmhouses, colonials and ranch-style homes. For a four-bedroom home on an acre or more of land, homeowners should expect to pay between $280,000 and $400,000.

Children in the community may begin their public education at Caroline Elementary School, with a B rating from Niche and 9-1 student-teacher ratio. DeWitt Middle School has an 8-1 student-teacher ratio and scores an A-minus. Ithaca Senior High School has an A rating. The school has an average SAT score of 1350 and typically nearly 10% of graduating seniors go on to Cornell University.

The Sciencenter in Ithaca offers children and adults fun and learning amid the center’s 250 interactive exhibits. Kids can interact with reptiles or don a lab coat and build their own toy car.
