Northeast Jackson homes surrounding a popular park
Though Jackson's biggest parks sprawl on the city's west side, a new buzz surrounds Loomis Park, an urban green space a few blocks from bustling Michigan Avenue downtown. The city continues to update the facilities here to give homeowners a well-rounded community meeting place close to home. Those neighboring this staple park also live blocks from Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, major employers, entertainment venues and restaurants at the city's epicenter.

Timely updates to Loomis Park
Jackson City Council recently approved renovations to the 50-year-old Boos Recreation Center, Loomis Park's indoor facility, which include a new ceiling for the gymnasium for safer community sports. The building is also home to a party room with a fireplace available to rent for birthdays and other celebrations and serves as a cooling center for neighbors in the hot summer months. Though Loomis Park’s wooden playground was taken down in 2023, a new playground installed the same year is fully accessible for all children. The pavilion was likewise revamped for community events like Jackson Public Schools’ Meet Up and Eat Up program, which provides free meals to students aged 18 and younger throughout the summer. Besides this nearby green space, residents take day trips about 3 miles west to vast Ella Sharp Park, walking and biking the Falling Waters Trail or grabbing ice cream at the Cascades man-made waterfall.

Northeast Jackson homes standing the test of time
These long blocks northeast of downtown Jackson contain tightly packed homes, where pedestrians can’t see backyards or detached garages from the road and sidewalks. Like much of the central city area, American Foursquares and National Folk-style homes sit alongside bungalows and colonial-style homes in Loomis. Some streets form inclines on one side, where homeowners climb sets of stairs cutting up the hill to their front door. Deciduous trees shade the sidewalks and cracked asphalt roads, but there’s even more tree cover in the backyards. Though the City of Jackson’s engineering division schedules road maintenance jobs each year throughout the city, many roads still contain potholes and uneven areas. Prices range from $30,000 to $175,000, encompassing homes that need a few repairs and turnkey options.

Lunch at Schlenker’s or trips to Jackson Crossing
In a small neighborhood retail center area at the intersection of East Ganson Street and East Avenue, Schlenker’s Sandwich Shop sits next to an auto-repair shop across from a tattoo parlor and a bicycle shop. Inside Schlenker’s red-and-green shack, patrons chow on homestyle burgers at the few bar stools around its U-shaped lunch counter. Besides neighborhood hangouts like this, locals head just 1.5 miles from the rustic storefronts and restaurants of downtown Jackson. “Veritas is right downtown for date nights, and something more casual would be The Dirty Bird, which has chicken tenders and wings,” says Ray Snell, Jackson resident of 55 years and City Commissioner. “And if you want more than just chicken downtown, there’s The Chase Sports Bar, which is more of a pizza and burger place. Just what would be considered next to downtown there’s Steve's Ranch, a great little place with a backroom where they host a lot of groups like the Rotary Club.” For groceries, folks head about 1.5 miles up East Michigan Avenue to Aldi and Meijer. Beyond these options closest to home, Jackson Crossing on the city’s northwest end offers a wider variety of big-box grocers like Kroger, chain restaurants and entertainment options like GQT Jackson 10, the local movie theater.

Getting around Jackson and to nearby cities
“You have your urban parks downtown, but in 5 minutes you can be anywhere in Jackson,” Snell says. “Business 127 and 94 go right through town, and they’re both four-lane roads, so it’s easy to get where you wanna go.” From here, residents can reach Lansing in about 42 miles, Ann Arbor in about 36 miles and Detroit in 77. The neighborhood is also just a mile from major Jackson employers like aircraft parts provider Eaton Corporation and the Consumers Energy campus downtown. Even closer to home is Henry Ford Jackson Hospital on East Michigan Avenue, which is surrounded by specialty care offices both within and outside of the Allegiance Health network. Non-drivers take Jackson Area Transit Authority (JATA) buses to the transfer center near Washington Avenue and Cortland Street. Jackson Station, which has been in operation since the 1850s, is now an Amtrak stop en route to Detroit and Chicago. The closest airport for commercial flights is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, 59 miles away.
