Centralized living south of downtown Jackson
A wide range of lifestyles converge in Mound, a community of homes along the city blocks of Mound Avenue and Sixth Street south of Jackson, MI. As one of the many residential pockets of the city’s lower center, Mound bridges the gap between the sought-after communities near Cascades and Essex Heights and the up-and-coming areas of the Southside. 20th century home styles are a common sight in the area, and residents have convenient connections to Downtown Jackson for dining options, but what may come as a surprise is the area’s wealth of things to do despite its residential focus. “The biggest draw is probably the parks. Sometimes they’ll do food truck days or Civil War reenactments, other events like that,” says Bill Beadenkopf, a resident of the area. Beadenkopf’s wife Angela runs By Grace Cakes, a gluten-free home bakery offering cakes, donuts and other pastries for weddings, baby showers and other special events in the area.

Waterfall light shows, splash pads and golf at Cascades Park
Cascades Park sits about 1 mile southwest of the neighborhood and takes its name from an artificial waterfall established there in the 1930s. During evening summers, the waterfall comes to life with a programmed light show, coordinating hundreds of LEDs in sync with music. The waterfall is adjacent to Sparks Foundation Community Park, where locals can find the 18-hole Cascades Golf Course, a splash pad and six ball fields. South of both the neighborhood and Cascades Park, the Falling Waters Trail/Inter City Bike Trail connects the Jackson community to Summit Township and Concord to the west with a dedicated 10-mile path for walking and biking excursions.

Civil War reenactments at the Cascades and bar hops downtown
Southwest of Mound at the Cascades, Jackson residents converge at the lighted waterfall to see fireworks for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. The park also hosts live music nights at the Cascades Amphitheater each week during its summer season and hosts the annual Jackson Civil War Muster in August. This large-scale Civil War event draws crowds of thousands to recreate battles, participate in a traditional military ball and learn about the war from historians. To the north in Downtown Jackson, a social district lets residents enjoy beverages from bars such as Junkyard Dog, Ogma Brewing Company and the Dirty Bird while shopping at local stores or enjoying gathering spaces such as Horace Blackman Park.
