Southeast Jackson community with Polish-American roots
One of Jackson’s most tenured Catholic parishes sits on Elm Avenue and Pringle Avenue on the city’s southeast side. In 1920, St. Stanislaus Kostka opened on the corner as a religious haven for the Polish families living nearby. More than 100 years later, the church still holds a vigil mass on Saturdays in the neighborhood. Inspired by its ethnic heritage, the neighborhood shares its name with a larger counterpart near Detroit. In Jackson's Poletown, local organizations like the Polish Falcons have ensured that the neighborhood’s identity endures, while 20th-century homes in a familiar traditional style have given the area a broad appeal for residents from all walks of life.
Early 20th-century homes along Michigan Avenue
Many homes share a straightforward, national folk style in Poletown. Homes typically have simple forms with minimal ornamentation, gabled roofs and covered or enclosed porches. Foursquare-style homes are a popular variation of the general style. “It’s a very cozy area -- they’re really solid homes, and a lot of them are kind of treasured. They may or may not have been updated with modern touches, but a lot of people buying today can really appreciate those earlier homes,” says Kathy Byerly, an associate broker with ERA Reardon Realty in Jackson. Byerly has sold homes in Jackson and other Michigan communities for more than 20 years. Single-family homes in the area generally range from about $27,000 to $80,000 for properties with higher upkeep needs and $87,000 to $138,000 for move-in-ready properties. Duplexes and multi-unit properties typically range from $27,000 to $115,000. According to the First Street Foundation's Flood Factor index, some areas in the neighborhood may have a higher risk of flooding. Locals living near major roads may experience higher noise levels. The Consumers Energy Jackson power plant is located within the neighborhood on Chapin Street.
