Established neighborhood near downtown Jackson

Only a couple of miles from downtown Jackson and close to two shopping centers in the city, West Ganson has mostly older homes. “It’s an established neighborhood where most houses are at least 100 years old,” says Kayla Dominique, a Realtor with 11 years of experience at Howard Hanna Real Estate. The western part of the neighborhood has a couple of small industrial buildings along Ganson Street, which include a steel treating company and a storage facility.

An occasional new construction house in West Ganson

While many of the houses in the neighborhood were built between 1900 and 1930, some are as old as the late 1800s, and a few new construction homes have been built on green space. Though built in the past couple of years, these homes are built with materials that accurately reflect the older style of the rest of the neighborhood. Bungalows, Foursquare, Craftsman and ranch-style duplexes are priced between $100,000 to $200,000, with homes needing renovation priced under $100,000.

Two Jackson shopping malls within a few miles

Close to Interstate 94 and just a few minutes drive north is the Jackson Crossing Mall, with major retail options like Target, Hobby Lobby, Lowe’s and The Home Depot, either part of the mall or surrounding it. The other option for indoor shopping is the Westwood Mall, which has Walmart Supercenter and JCPenney as anchor stores. Aldi is along North Street for groceries, and more retail north on West Avenue and Wisner Street, like Ashley Outlet Furniture and Jo-Ann Fabrics. Restaurant options include Roxy Café, a retro-style breakfast and lunch diner that’s a local staple. “People in Jackson know all about Roxy Café. It seems like it’s always busy,” says DeAnn Gumbert, Realtor with RE/MAX Mid-Michigan. Hungry Howie’s Pizza is famous for its flavored crust options, such as garlic herb, ranch, Cajun, and butter.

Inside and outside recreation in West Ganson

Two recreation destinations in the neighborhood focus on skating on a couple of different surfaces. Allskate Fun Center is a roller-skating rink that is also open for birthday parties. There’s also a laser tag arena. Some special themed skate nights include skating to different kinds of music, including country and Christian tunes. If skating on ice is preferred, then Optimist Ice Arena has opportunities for open public skating, skating lessons and youth and adult hockey clubs. Ganson Street Park is just one block east of the neighborhood’s boundary along West Avenue, featuring a playground, walking paths and a green space within the small corner park across from the Ganson Street Baptist Church. Further south is Cascade Falls, a man-made waterfall that has an accompanying light show Wednesday through Sunday nights in the summer. It’s part of Sparks Foundation County Park.

Jackson is a car-dependent city

Some streets in the neighborhood have sidewalks, and some do not. The Jackson Area Transportation Agency has limited routes in the city, but they offer a reserve-a-ride program for people within the city limits on a first-come, first-serve basis. The buses are smaller, and they provide curb-to-curb service. “Living in this neighborhood means you are car-dependent,” Dominique says. “The location makes it easy for commuters.” Interstate 94 is a few miles north, and the city is 80 miles west of Detroit. A flight can be caught at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, about 60 miles away, for getaways. Jackson County Airport is much smaller, with private planes and some corporate jets. The nearest medical facility is Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, about 10 minutes from the neighborhood.
