Bewteen downtown and the beach
Fort Caroline Shores is named after the nearby historic Fort Caroline National Memorial and the marshy rivers touching waterfront homes. "The community is a very well-kept secret in the city. I grew up in Jacksonville, and when searching for a new home, I knew that this was it!" says Kirk Killebrew, broker of Killebrew and Company Realty. "Fort Caroline Shores is centrally located, with close proximity to the beaches and not too far from downtown." The neighborhood shares space with vast nature preserves to the north. Inside the subdivisions, oak trees reach above houses, casting shadows on front lawns.

A part of a 46,000-acre preserve
The northern section of Fort Caroline Shores is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Area Timucuan Ecological Historic Preserve. "The park is in fact a part of the larger Timucuan Ecological Preserve, a 46,000-acre national park that reaches up near Nassau County's coastal estuaries. The Fort Caroline area is the focal point of the preserve," says Josh Salestrom, a Fort Caroline Visitor Center park ranger who lives in the community. "There's a museum with a ranger program discussing the history of the site and hiking trails to get out into nature. People can also walk their dogs on a leash. It's a wonderful place and one of the few places to get out into Old Florida." Salestrom also says that the Theodore Roosevelt Area has a range of wildlife, from mosquitoes and waterbirds to the occasional black bear sighting. Just outside the neighborhood is Ed Austins Regional Park, with a disc golf course and dog park. Locals may also play a round on the 18-hole course at Hidden Hills Golf Club.
At The Theodore Roosevelt Area of the Timucuan Preserve you can hike the trails.
