Fort Caroline Shores
A part of a 46,000-acre preserve
The northern section of Fort Caroline Shores is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Area Timucuan Ecological Historic Preserve. "The park is in fact a part of the larger Timucuan Ecological Preserve, a 46,000-acre national park that reaches up near Nassau County's coastal estuaries. The Fort Caroline area is the focal point of the preserve," says Josh Salestrom, a Fort Caroline Visitor Center park ranger who lives in the community. "There's a museum with a ranger program discussing the history of the site and hiking trails to get out into nature. People can also walk their dogs on a leash. It's a wonderful place and one of the few places to get out into Old Florida." Salestrom also says that the Theodore Roosevelt Area has a range of wildlife, from mosquitoes and waterbirds to the occasional black bear sighting. Just outside the neighborhood is Ed Austins Regional Park, with a disc golf course and dog park. Locals may also play a round on the 18-hole course at Hidden Hills Golf Club.A range of midcentury and contempoarary
According to Killebrew, Fort Caroline Shores has established homes built on larger plots of land than the rest of Arlington. Most residences range in size from 1,500 to over 3,000 square feet. The community includes several ranch and midcentury styles. Tudor Revivals and contemporary waterfront homes situated further from the streets offer a layer of privacy. Properties have a higher value compared to the city's metro area. Buyers can expect homes to leave the market between $400,000 and $800,000 on average. Many homes have a moderate risk of flooding due to the surrounding marshland.Shopping in Arlington
The Fort Caroline Shores is primarily residential, and locals head just outside the community for retail and dining options. Following Monument Road leads to many of East Arlington's commercial spaces. Cobblestone Plaza has a Publix for grocery shopping. Across the street are a handful of local restaurants, like Cliff's Bar and Grill. "Aside from the standard chain restaurants, there's Matt Italian Cuisine and Sashimi Fusion. But people also go to Mayport for Singletons Seafood Shack and Safe Harbor," Salestrom says.Students attend school outside the community
Students attend Sabal Palm Elementary on Kernan Boulevard, which has a B-plus grade from Niche. Landmark Middle receives a B-minus and offers academic programs emphasizing STEM and performing arts. The public school also caters to children with visual and hearing impairments. Sandalwood High, which earns a B-plus, provides early college courses and academies for culinary arts, information technology, and fine arts, as well as an award-winning AFJROTC program.Close to Interstate 295
Fort Caroline Shores is less than 10 miles from the beaches and 15 miles from downtown. Interstate 295 awaits five miles away, taking residents to the rest of Jacksonville.History off the shore
A few miles north is the Fort Caroline National Memorial. The space was once a French settlement dating back to the 16th century. Today, it serves as a dedicated exhibit showcasing how people interacted with the nearby environment throughout history.
