A friendly suburban community between downtown Jacksonville and its beaches
Hugging a bend of Pottsburg Creek in Jacksonville’s Southside, the Grove Park neighborhood is something of a hidden secret; a bucolic suburb with a friendly community that loves to get together for youth sports, holidays and barbecues.
About 25 years ago, local resident Janine Basford and her family moved to the community. She says the spacious quarter-acre property lots and the long driveway leading to a private garage and pool in the back of the home they bought enticed them to the neighborhood. “Most of the homes are made of brick, it’s sidewalk friendly and we have a great neighborhood school at Holiday Hill Elementary,” she says. “Neighbors put luminaries in their driveways around Christmas. And there are hay rides and movie nights throughout the year. It’s just a real nice, close-knit community.”
Basford, a local real estate agent with Watson Realty, says the Grove Park section has a neighborhood association with a voluntary $50 fee to help cover the cost of events and things like the paper bag luminaries during the winter holidays. She says Holiday Hill Baptist Church and other houses of worship in the community also organize cookouts and other events that bring neighbors together.
Waterfront homes and quarter-acre lots in Jacksonville's Southside
Predominately residential, the neighborhood is brimming with single-family subdivisions and a handful of apartment complexes. The Glynlea Park section showcases more established ranch-style homes that sell for $200,000 to $300,000, while housing tracts along Altama Road, Holiday Road and Grove Park Boulevard include some larger and more contemporary builds that sell for $300,000 to $500,000. Coveted waterfront homes with docks on Pottsburg Creek sell for even more, commanding offers between $500,000 to $750,000 for their marvelous views of the creek and immediate access to aquatic recreation.
Magnet programs offered at Holiday Hill Elementary
The community is a part of the Duval County Public Schools system and home to magnet programs at Holiday Hill Elementary School. Niche gives the school a B. From there, students can attend nearby Southside Middle School or Englewood High School, which get a C and C-plus, respectively.
Joining the Southside Youth Athletic Association at Glynlea Park
Youth athletes spend time on the ball fields at Holiday Hill Park or Glynlea Park, where the local Southside Youth Athletic Association hosts many of its league games. But sports-loving residents of all ages can take advantage of the community basketball and pickleball courts at Glynlea. Those looking for indoor fun can head to Jacksonville's Children's Museum, where hands-on interactive and learning play is encouraged. On the six-lane Beach Boulevard to the south of the community, the Jax Lanes Bowling Center has daily deals to keep the balls rolling and crashing into pins.
Neighborhood coffee and supermarkets on Beach Boulevard
The community doesn’t have any businesses within the neighborhood. With Atlantic Boulevard to the north and Beach Boulevard to the south, however, residents can easily get in their cars to visit nearby strip malls and shopping centers. At the entrance to the neighborhood on Beach Boulevard, Biggby Coffee recently opened and provides a place for people to get a latte or dark roast before heading to work or picking up groceries next door at the Rowe’s IGA Supermarket. Next to the bowling alley, All Wet Sports supplies surfboards, kayaks and paddle boards for fun on the water.
Near downtown and the St. Johns Town Center
While downtown Jacksonville and all its cultural trappings are just five miles west, the neighborhood is about equidistant to suburban office parks and more than 175 businesses at St. Johns Town Center near the Interstate 295 and J Turner Butler Boulevard interchange to the east. About five more miles in the same direction, folks can hit the Atlantic shore for a weekend beach day. While the neighborhood is more car-oriented, folks can catch Jacksonville Transportation Authority buses on Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard to commute and get around the region.
