Rural neighborhood that balances privacy and community
Ruch is a small, rural community of under 2,000 people, surrounded by Oregon mountains and connected to the Applegate Valley. Homes come with stunning views of fertile vineyards and silent mountains from private decks, siloed from neighbors by acres of land. However, the community still knows how to come together. “Everybody knows everybody, but they still keep to their own all at the same time,” says Tasha Knowlton, owner of local business Sweets-N-Eats. “Anytime anybody needs help, everyone is right there to gather around them.”

Acreage with room for horse stalls, chicken coops
Homes come with multiple acres of land, separated from nearby properties by dense, mature trees, wooden fences and plenty of space. “It’s really pretty out there. You are in the woods, and you are in an area where you don’t have a lot of close neighbors,” says Steve Thomas, a broker with the Steve Thomas Group of eXp Realty, Southern Oregon. “The [Applegate River] is always running, and the scenery is just gorgeous out there.”
Ranch-style homes primarily come with three bedrooms designed either in the 1960s and 1970s or later, in the 1990s, costing between $550,000 and $615,000. Horse stalls, accessory dwelling units and pools are not a rare sight, situated on acreage with room for multiple backyard amenities. Homes that cost around $1 million or more were constructed in the 1990s. Homeowners tend to barns, horse stables and chicken coops, enjoying updated interiors and views of sprawling vineyards backdropped by mountains after a day’s work.

Swimming at Applegate River and Applegate Lake
The Cantrall Buckley County Park is a few minutes away by car, and the green space spans over 88 acres of laurel and pine tree forest. The rocky banks of the Applegate River call adventurers for a dip on sticky summer days, and swimmers can float down the river in tubes in calmer water. Moss and ivy creep up the base of a stone bridge that passes over shallower water, inviting hikers to keep exploring. The park’s campsite features campfire rings, picnic tables, restrooms and a playground for younger campers.
On the other side of Ruch, adrenaline seekers climb into the Oregon mountains to reach Woodrat Mountain Hang Gliding and Paragliding Launch. With two different heights to choose from, the launch spot offers various prime views of the Applegate Valley below. Applegate Lake, less than 25 minutes from Ruch on the California-Oregon border, is another popular destination for paddleboarding and swimming.

Nature education at Ruch Outdoor Community School
Ruch is a Census-designated place, and local children belong to Medford Public Schools. Ruch Outdoor Community School, which earns a B-plus grade from Niche, educates children from kindergarten through eighth grade with a curriculum that integrates sustainability, place-based education and project-based learning. Students learn about the surrounding ecosystem by raising salmon fish eggs in a classroom aquarium before releasing the fish into the Rogue River. The school also collaborates with White Oak Farm and AmeriCorps to teach students how to plant seeds, nurture crops, weed, harvest their produce and prepare land for winter. Local students can also attend C-rated McLoughlin Middle School for grades sixth through eighth before potentially moving forward to South Medford High School, which receives a C-plus.

Live music and wine at Red Lily Vineyards
Sweets-N-Eats is one of the few local businesses in Ruch, and it serves a rotating breakfast, lunch and dinner menu in its shaded outdoor dining area. Locals also head to the restaurant and bakery for a baked treat or to order an intricate, custom cake for their next celebration. Red Lily Vineyards is another local favorite where wine enthusiasts can sample the signature, Spanish-inspired varietal flight over tapas, a hummus plate or bruschetta. On summer Thursday nights, there’s live music and food trucks as part of Rock the River. Ruch Country Store is on the Medford-Provolt Highway for grocery needs, though residents often travel to Jacksonville and Medford.

Severe risk of fire
Because of the densely forested mountains surrounding Ruch and the region’s arid, hot summers, the community is at a higher risk of wildfire, which may result in compromised air quality. To help residents prepare for wildfires, the county has developed a community-level emergency notifications system.
