Jamestown Village offers quintessential New England beach vibes
Nestled along Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, Jamestown Village is a quintessential New England beach community. Calm waters ripple against the rocky shoreline, periwinkle hydrangea bushes encircle shingle-façade dwellings and locally owned establishments create small-town character. “Jamestown Village definitely has a secluded island vibe, but the Newport Bridge and our Ferry make it easy to get to the mainland,” says Nancy Cresser, a sales associate with Lila Delman and a Jamestown resident. “We only have that one highway, so there’s less traffic and a quieter lifestyle compared to Newport, even during the summer.”

Victorian-era dwellings and homes set against Narragansett Bay
Jamestown Village’s narrow, tree-covered inland roads are brimming with dwellings built from the late 1800s to the 1920s. Three-to-four-bedroom gambrel farmhouses, saltbox-style homes and Cape Cod cottages sit on quarter acre-lots tucked behind white picket fences. Oceanfront properties on 1-acre lots retain this turn-of-the-century charm. Ornate Victorian homes face bustling boatyards, and multi-gable shingle-style dwellings often have their own stretch of beach access. “We have a strong second home market here. Many families have lived, or summered, in Jamestown for generations,” says Cresser. “They tend to keep homes within their families, which puts pressure on inventory and prices.” An inland home typically costs between $600,000 and $800,000, whereas a beachside estate sells in the $1 million to $4 million range.

Mackerel Cove Beach access, boat clubs and Fort Wetherill State Park
“The entire town has 35 public shoreline access points,” says Cresser. “One of the most popular is Mackerel Cove Beach, which is actually in this area. It’s lifeguard-protected during the summer and good for kayaking year-round.” Walkers can follow the neighborhood’s paved pathways to reach this beach, and drivers can buy parking passes for the summer season. From Dutch Harbor to Safe Harbor, boat storage abounds Jamestown Village. Founded in 1892, The Conanicut Yacht Club has moorings, a boat launch service and kayak rentals. Seasoned sailors can join the club’s Around the Island Race, an event held every September where over 100 boaters compete to circle Jamestown first.
The neighborhood’s nautical theme continues throughout its other recreational hubs. For instance, the Jamestown Community Playground has a lighthouse-style play structure, rope climbers, and a zipline. The 61-acre Fort Wetherill State Park is a hot spot for nature lovers and history buffs. Set atop 100-foot-high granite cliffs, the green space offers scenic hiking and mountain biking trails. Scuba divers can spot longfin squid, and anglers can catch striped bass here. As a military site dating back to the Revolutionary War, the land is covered in former gun batteries and lookout towers. The 9-hole Jamestown Golf Course is also in the neighborhood, featuring rolling fairways and panoramic ocean views.
