Fun on Lake Koshkonong and the Rock River
Newville, about 15 miles north of Janesville, is a resort community with year-round activities on Lake Koshkonong. “There’s a campground called the Rock River Leisure Estates, which is near the river, that have smaller homes that people use seasonally in the summer,” says Michael Paumen, a real estate agent at First Weber with about nine years of experience. “There are some people who live seasonally near the lake. It’s about 75% of the people live there year-round.” Those who live north of Route 59 will live closer to the lake, while those south of 59 tend to be closer to the river.

For those without access to a boat, Floating Toy on Ellendale Road on the Rock River has watercraft and water skis for rent. The fun doesn’t end in the winter. When the lake freezes over, there are snowmobile races and ice fishing.

Just blocks from the lake, Lake House Inn is branded as a supper club, with a restaurant open from Thursday through Saturday nights and for brunch on Sunday. There’s a liquor-themed gift shop that also sells chocolates and tchotchkes. It’s in a house that was built in the 1840s and just went through a recent renovation. A liquor boutique and tasting bar are also part of the gift shop. A few other area restaurants double as a place to snag watercraft for a day. “Anchor Inn and Wet Bottoms are restaurants on the water that also rent boats,” Paumen says. Anchor Bar & Grill has live music with a stage on the water, just a few feet offshore. There’s live music in the summer on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday during the day. There’s indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy burgers, sandwiches, salads, wings and tacos. There’s trivia every other Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Across the Rock River is Wet Bottoms Bar & BBQ—plenty of outdoor seating on the south side of the Rock River with occasional live music on weekends. Barbecue is the specialty, with the option to have a gluten-free bun, and they make their own sweet barbecue sauce, which is predominantly sweet. The closest grocery store is Piggly Wiggly, about 5 miles to the west in the town of Edgerton.
