A farming community with roots in oil
The community of Jennings, site of Louisiana's first oil well in 1901, has since transformed into a farming hub for cattle and grains. Today, this area maintains a small-town feel as the city seat of Jefferson Davis Parish. The community is located between the larger cities of Lafayette and Lake Charles. Residents can shop locally and gather for live performances throughout the year at Strand Theatre.
A community with available land, 21st-century homes and fixer-uppers
The community contains farmhouses, manufactured homes and ranch styles from the 20th century. Many need rehab or upgrades. New Traditional styles were built between the early 2000s and 2010s; these properties are found inside the River Oaks and Martin Home Center subdivisions. The median price for single-family homes is around $170,000, which is significantly lower than national numbers. However, pricing depends on the parcel size, build year and renovations. Buyers can also find plots of land ranging from a third of an acre to over 50 acres. The region has a risk of severe weather, including high winds and storms, which can damage residences.
Local eateries and markets in Jennings
For over 40 years, Rocket Drive has been a Jennings dining staple serving burgers, po'boys and shakes. There are also seafood restaurants like C'est Bon and establishments with Cajun-inspired menu items, such as Boudin King Restaurant. Grocery options include Lyons Market and the locally-run Hanson's Super Foods. A Walmart Supercenter awaits to the north, off Interstate 10. The seasonal farmers market runs from the middle of March to autumn at Founder's Park.
Attending Jefferson Davis Parish Schools
Families are zoned for Jefferson Davis Parish Schools, which has a B-plus rating from Niche. However, some enroll in the private, faith-based option Lady Immaculate Catholic School. Jennings Elementary accepts kindergarten to sixth graders. Students between seventh and twelfth grade attend Jennings High. Both schools have B ratings. Next door to the high school is a SOWELA Technical Community College campus. The school offers programs for industrial technologies, nursing, and welding.
Local leagues, swim lessons and a public golf club
Zigler Park and Recreation Complex has multiple lighted fields for local sports leagues. The Jennings High School Alumni Softball tournament, a community fundraiser, has been held at the park every year since 1994. Children can take swimming lessons at the War Memorial Pool during the summer. The city also manages a few smaller green spaces, including Peters Street Playground. Residents gather for live music performances during Turn It Up Tuesdays, held at Founder's Park. Jennings Golf Club offers a public driving range and an 18-hole course.
Plays and movies at Strand Theater
The Strand Theatre, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been a part of the area since 1939. Today, performances are run by the local theater troupes, A Block off Broadway and the youth group, A Chip Off the Old Block. Sometimes, the theater hosts free, family-friendly movie nights on Saturdays.
Traveling on Evangeline Highway and I-10
Ochsner American Legion Hospital and the local emergency room is off Elton Road. Evangeline Highway leads drivers to the north of the region, while Interstate 10 extends east to west. Locals are within 35 miles of Lake Charles and 40 miles from Lafayette.
