A Chain O’ Lakes community
Situated in the Chain O’ Lakes region, Pistakee Highlands peers over its namesake lake, offering quiet suburban living across a bridge from the village of Fox Lake.“ “There are some houses that are close to the lake, but there’s more opportunity for waterfront property with the number of channels in this neighborhood,” says Shawn Strach, a managing broker with Dream Real Estate. While the area is not an entirely rural, Pistakee Highlands is an unincorporated community with most homes on a well or septic system. Still, the community’s proximity to recreational amenities and a couple of small Main Street communities make it appealing option for those seeking a summer retreat or a slower pace of life by the lake in all four seasons.

Homes by Pistakee Lake and the Fox River
The proximity of the water makes this neighborhood a popular place to want to live when a home is on the market. Most homes are from the 1950s through the ‘70s, with the majority being ranch-style, but there are also early 20th-century Cape Cod homes that have been renovated. Prices range from $150,000 to $550,000, with lakefront homes, complete with a dock, between $400,000 and $650,000. While lakefront homes are popular, there is a flood risk after heavy rains. It’s advised that those who want to buy a close to the water purchase flood insurance, which is not part of a standard homeowners insurance policy. There are also homes with a waterfront view of a channel with a moderate to high risk of flooding. The overall crime score for this neighborhood is a 3, lower than the national average of 4.

A park by Pistakee Lake
At the end of Lake Street on the shores of Pistakee Lake is the aptly named Lake Street Park, which offers many different views of the water, either from the playground, picnic tables or while casting a line into the water. Fox Lake Road Park is a small facility with limited parking. Beyond the lakeshore, anglers also drop bait in Nippersink Creek, connected to the larger lake via the channels. There are also a couple of benches and a small play area. Naturally, boating in the summer is a popular recreational activity, but people remain even when temperatures sink deeply after the fall. “There’s activity on the lake in the winter, mainly snowmobiling. That’s only if the lake freezes hard enough,” Strach says. Rustic Harbor Marina is in the neighborhood, providing boat storage and service. A business run out of a house on the waterfront is called Rod and Pan Guide Service, which is used to book fishing expeditions within the Chain O’ Lakes system.

Celebrating German heritage in nearby Johnsbug
Pistakee Highlands is 3 miles south of the village of Johnsburg, which offers the opportunity to participate in an event that brings that community together. The Saufen and Spiel Festival celebrates the town's German heritage. Johnsburg was first settled by immigrant German families escaping religious persecution in 1841. The weekend festival in early September features live music, a Glockenspiel performance and a parade. ‘Saufen’ is the German word for booze, and ‘Spiel’ means play, so there’s plenty of fun and drinks during the festival. “The community rallies around that special event,” Strach says.
