Escaping the corporate culture of Portland
Oatfield, Oregon, may be a short, 15-minute drive from Portland, but it’s a world away for those who want to escape city life and the crush of high-tech corporate culture. A small suburban community of just under 15,000 people, Oatfield is in Clackamas County, which is one of nine that make up the famed, 150-mile-long Willamette Valley that runs from Portland to Eugene. The valley region is known for its production of award-winning Oregon Wines, as well as crops of hazelnuts, apples, grapes, cherries, hops and Christmas trees. While small in area, Oatfield packs a punch with outdoor activities and natural vistas. As Tedi McKnight-Heikes, a veteran realtor with Engel & Volkers West Portland says, “We’ve seen an increase in the number of Portlandians moving to Oatfield. From a practical perspective, buyers know they can get larger lots for relatively reasonable prices. But they’re also coming here for the quiet, the seclusion and the wide-open acres.”

From updated midcentury homes to Creekside custom builds
Located between the towns of Milwaukie and Gladstone, Oatfield has a variety of properties from new, estate-style homes, to updated midcentury homes and small suburban homes close to area schools. Creekside custom homes with about 4,000 square feet can be found from about $800,000 to $900,000. Midcentury modern split-level homes waiting for your updates list for around $500,000, while well-updated Colonial-Revival homes from the 1990s can be found for around $600,000. You’ll find sidewalks and cul-de-sacs accenting newer homes in planned subdivisions. You may not see a single neighbor for days if you grab a creekside homesite. As realtor McKnight-Heikes adds, “Buyers will find a good mix of homes, prices and locations. Nothing is cookie-cutter in Oatfield. Large or small, homes are distinctive – pretty much like the people who live here.”

Rare white oak trees and wetlands in North Clackamas
Three-Creeks Natural Area sits at the north edge of the neighborhood and offers 90 acres of stream, wetland and upland fishing for Steelhead Trout and Coho Salmon. Hiking trails introduce you to rare 500-year-old Oregon White Oak trees that help protect the wetland and provide habitat to rare birds, owls and animals. Photographers enjoy the variety of subjects to shoot along Scott Creek, Phillips Creek and Deer Creek. A visit to Alma Myra Park rewards you with peace and quiet. The playground was updated with an entirely new structure in fall 2023, so be sure to bring your kids here.
