Kids in Greenville Avenue can attend school through the Johnston Public School District. The school system has two preschools, four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Children in the neighborhood can attend Sarah Dyer Barnes Elementary School and then move on to Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School and Johnston Senior High School. All three schools have B-minus ratings from Niche. The high school offers educational pathways and academies to its students, including a two- to three-year finance academy, a music academy and a law, public safety and government academy in partnership with Roger Williams University. The pathways give students the opportunity to pick an educational track that aligns with their career goals.
Exercise and activity in the Ocean State
Greenville Avenue is at the epicenter of Johnston recreation. In the middle of the neighborhood is Johnston Memorial Park, a vast green space with a woodsy paved pathway around a pond. On the weekends, kids play baseball on Kennedy Field and scale the park’s playground. “You walk your dog there if you want. It’s a small park for Johnston residents. Anyone can go, but it’s mostly Johnston residents,” Coupe says. Basketball, volleyball and gymnastics happen at the Johnston Indoor Recreation Center, which holds open gym for Johnston residents on Saturdays.
Hungry on Hartford Avenue
Neighbors can head to Hartford Avenue when they need to go shopping. Grocery stores like Market Basket and Price Rite Marketplace sit along this major Johnston thoroughfare. Big-box stores like Ocean State Job Lot and supermarkets like Stop & Shop are all situated along this road, as is R.I. Homemade Donuts. R.I. Homemade Donuts creates sweet treats like glazed doughnuts, cream-filled pastries and bear claws. Underneath a nondescript awning at Town & Country Plaza is the Lighthouse Restaurant, a breakfast and lunch eatery serving eggs benedict and banana pancakes. Guests eat in a cozy dining room with wooden tables and a bubbling fish tank.
Greenville Avenue and the interstate
Greenville Avenue includes parts of I-295 and U.S. Route 6. I-295 runs northeast and merges with Interstate 95 in Attleborough, Massachusetts, and Route 6 goes east into Providence and west until it merges with Interstate 384 east of Hartford, Connecticut.
Clubs at Mohr Memorial Library
Non-athletes will appreciate the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, which offers clubs for knitting and crocheting and activities like story time for young children.
