Seated beside Stonycreek River and under the Johnstown Expressway, it might be easy to miss the small neighborhood of Kernville, near downtown Johnstown, Pennsylvania. However, Kernville is filled with originality and artistic charm. From art gardens to eclectic restaurants, the area has a quirky side. Johnstown was primarily industrial until 1992 when Bethlehem Steel pulled out of the area. The city has been rebuilding, and many neighborhoods are searching for new identities. The arts and culture movement in the region has been promoted by local organizations such as Visit Johnstown, an agency that highlights all the events going on in and around the city and the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, which puts on performances and offers performing arts workshops to Cambria County residents. Kernville residents are making the neighborhood their own and embracing the new creative culture of their once-industrial city.

Music festival in Peoples Natural Gas Park
“We just got through Flood City Music Fest,” says Lisa Rager, the executive director of Visit Johnstown. “It’s a huge, grassroots music festival held downtown.” The festival is held in July at Peoples Natural Gas Park. Artists perform on the main stage while local vendors sell food, jewelry, essential oils and other artisanal crafts. The Cambria County Library downtown also hosts art-centered events. “We have a Senior Crafternoon three times a month,” says Joyce Homan, the reference supervisor at the Cambria County Library. In addition to senior crafting time, the library participates in the Downtown Johnstown Culture Crawl, a day for residents to explore local businesses. Religious services are held at Johnstown Grace Brethren Church, Franklin Street Church and St. John Gualbert Cathedral.

Walking paths and picnic areas at Somerset Street Park
At Somerset Street Park, a fenced-in blue and green jungle gym hides from view among mature trees. Benches and walking paths surround the area. Green space beside Stony Creek River offers a spot for picnics, but visitors should be aware that a sign discourages dogs and skateboards. In the shade of the Johnstown Expressway, the Healing Garden Art Park is a public space dedicated to mental health and suicide awareness. Easels attached to large wheels are set out for creatives to use. The garden is still new, and online art workshops and other pieces will be added to the area soon.
Commuters use local routes and bus stops
