Morrellville-Cambria preserves and expands Johnstown’s cultural heritage

Made up of historic Morrellville and Cambria City, Morrellville-Cambria's unassuming city blocks were home to the diverse immigrant populations that fueled Johnstown’s coal and steel sectors through the Industrial Age. This riverside area in Johnstown's west end declined after the city's 1977 flood toppled a steel industry that was already teetering, as in many other Rust Belt communities. Morrellville-Cambria has held onto its rich cultural heritage in community spaces, groups and traditions – the kinds of things that are starting to catch all of Johnstown many decades after the fall of industry. “If I had to point to a cultural landing spot for Johnstown, it would be Cambria City,” says Doug Meagher, a Johnstown native and Realtor with RE/MAX Power Associates. “Once the steel mills left, Johnstown got into this mental depression. Some people are still waiting for that one large employer to come save it; those people got used to disappointment. But there are finally younger people and groups on a mission to make Johnstown better. Now, I honestly feel that Johnstown has the momentum to make these changes – to make it cleaner, nicer and more attractive, all surrounded by what the outdoors in the Laurel Highlands have to offer.”

Shopping and dining in Morrellville-Cambria and downtown Johnstown

While Morrellville-Cambria has more empty storefronts than in its heyday, longtime locally owned restaurants have stood the test of time. The names of casual watering holes like Wooly’s Neighborhood Celtic Pub advertise their cultural backgrounds and cuisines. Our Sons’ Family Restaurant has served diner fare to generations of locals. Laurel & Grouse is a much newer, upscale restaurant that still reflects the region’s roots as a Polish stronghold through fusion takes on pierogi. Grand churches tower above the skyline, built to serve the diversity of immigrant workers in centuries past. Some, like St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, continue to hold masses as they have for more than 100 years. Others, such as St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church, have been redeveloped into event and community spaces after congregations reorganized or dispersed. Groceries are available at Save A Lot and Giant Eagle Supermarket. Downtown Johnstown’s walkable shopping and dining district is a few miles from home.

The Cambria City Ethnic Festival and Heritage Discovery Center

Flags fly along Chestnut Street among churches, community centers and vendor booths during the annual Cambria City Ethnic Festival. While social groups like the First Catholic Slovak Bandhall represent the eastern-European predominance of Morrellville-Cambria's earliest immigrant families, the cuisines and traditions shared among modern attendees and vendors span the globe. Throughout Labor Day weekend, visitors enjoy live music, cultural dances and foods from around the world. When Morrellville-Cambria isn’t hosting a cultural festival, residents can still learn about Johnstown’s industrial and immigrant histories through the interactive exhibits at the Heritage Discovery Center. While special exhibits and programs rotate over time, the center has a permanent exhibit devoted to Cambria City, as well as a children's museum.

Prewar single-family homes starting around $20,000

Blocks of tightly plotted homes were developed throughout Morrellville-Cambria in the late-19th and early 20th centuries. Simple National-style homes and Foursquares are common, although some older houses have more ornate Victorian details, and scattered midcentury homes were built in later years. As industry declined, abandoned and blighted homes became common sights along sidewalk-lined blocks throughout the city. Single-family homes typically sell for $20,000 to $100,000 depending on their age and condition. “There are a lot of multi-family homes, kinds of duplexes. For example, my grandfather lived on one side of his, and his brother’s family lived on the other side. Family homes,” Meagher says. Multifamily homes, often in the form of twin homes or converted single-family residences, range from $20,000 to $70,000.

Johnstown parks and broader Laurel Highlands recreation

The Greater Johnstown Youth League plays on the baseball diamonds off D Street. West End Skate Park is currently home to a collection of quarter pipes and a half pipe, but future city recreation projects are expected to introduce more athletic courts, improved walking paths and green spaces to the area. Residents might head a few miles to the forested hiking trails in Stackhouse Park or travel a little farther to the vast recreation areas in the Laurel Highlands region. Within 10 miles of home, hikers stop at Adirondack shelters along the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, and cyclists travel the dozens of miles between rural communities on the Ghost Town Trail.

Flood risk on the Conemaugh River

Although catastrophic floods like the one in 1977 gave Johnstown the nickname of Flood City, extreme events are uncommon. Nuisance flooding of roads and properties near the Conemaugh River and narrower waterways like Saint Clair Run are more prevalent. Residents can look at maps to understand their potential risk and need for insurance.
