Prospect-Woodvale faces challenges but holds strong ties
The Prospect-Woodvale community sits just north of Downtown Johnstown, the Little Conemaugh River and Gautier Steel, a manufacturer that has been a part of the city’s history since 1906. The city was once a major player in the steel industry but took a hit in the 1970s when many manufacturing jobs went overseas. Prospect-Woodvale shows some of this economic downturn’s scars, with homes in need of repair and a higher crime rate than the national average. However, like the rest of the city, Prospect-Woodvale is resilient, with tight-knit residents who are protective of their community overlooking the Allegheny Mountains.
