Prospect-Woodvale faces challenges but holds strong ties

The Prospect-Woodvale community sits just north of Downtown Johnstown, the Little Conemaugh River and Gautier Steel, a manufacturer that has been a part of the city’s history since 1906. The city was once a major player in the steel industry but took a hit in the 1970s when many manufacturing jobs went overseas. Prospect-Woodvale shows some of this economic downturn’s scars, with homes in need of repair and a higher crime rate than the national average. However, like the rest of the city, Prospect-Woodvale is resilient, with tight-knit residents who are protective of their community overlooking the Allegheny Mountains.

Early 1900s homes line narrow streets with mountain views

On the neighborhood's east side, homes are mostly American Foursquares from the early 1900s. Some have been well-maintained over the years while others need significant repairs. They sit close together on hilly streets overlooking the nearby mountains. Front lawns are usually small, and garages are rare, so residents park on residential streets. Homes are similar on the west side, though lot sizes are sometimes bigger and flanked by mature trees. Prices range from about $40,000 to about $60,000 and are usually based on the condition of the house.

Prospect Housing Development is on the east side and offers units to low-income residents with one to four bedrooms. The housing complex recently underwent renovations when significant structural issues were identified. Residents had to move out in March 2023, and as of January 2025, they have been invited to move back into their homes.

Regarding crime, Prospect-Woodvale scores a 6 out of 10 on the CAP Index, two points higher than the national average.

Public schools rated C-minus to C with college credit options

The schools zoned to the neighborhood are Johnstown Elementary, which has a C-minus rating on Niche; Johnstown Middle, which also has a C-minus; and Johnstown High, which has a C rating. Kids at Johnstown High can take advantage of dual enrollment with Penn Highlands Community College and earn credit toward associate’s degrees. The University of Pittsburgh’s Johnstown Campus is about 8 miles from the neighborhood and offers more than 50 majors. Bishop McCort Catholic Academy is a private school option in the neighborhood and serves prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Laurel Highlands trail and Central Park are close to home

The Laurel Highlands Historical Village (LHHV) has a popular hiking trail that residents can access just outside of the neighborhood. Central Park is a small green space nearby with benches and a pavilion where the weekly Johnstown Farmers Market takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Friday from May to October.

Groceries and go-to meals found just outside the neighborhood

Residents head downtown for its shopping, dining and services. Popular local restaurants include The Fish Boat and Em’s Subs, both long-time community staples. Flood City Café is newer, but just as popular and loved for its sandwiches, salads and wraps. Save A Lot is about 3 miles from the neighborhood and where residents pick up groceries.

Annual music festival and local block parties bring neighbors together

The AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival is a city-wide event every July where over a dozen bands and musicians rock out at People’s Natural Gas Park. Smaller grassroots events are also held throughout the city. In 2025, Families R Us, a local community organization, partnered with other local non-profits to host block parties for kids in neighborhoods across the city. In July, they celebrated at Prospect Housing with face painting, games and bounce houses.

State Route 56 and local buses connect residents to the city

CamTran buses have multiple stops throughout the neighborhood, including one at Prospect Housing. State Route 56 runs along the neighborhood’s west side and travels throughout the city.

Warm summers, chilly winters and ongoing flood prevention

Summer temperatures are generally in the high 80s, and winters can range from the high 30s to the low 40s.The neighborhood, and city at large, is known for flooding. The Little Conemaugh River was the site of the city’s devastating 1889 flood as well as another major flood in 1977. There are levees among the Little Conemaugh and Stonycreek Rivers and regular city projects to remove sediment from the water.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
