Bordered by the Stonycreek River, Roxbury is a suburb in Johnstown with comparatively lower-priced homes and quick access to recreation. The city’s history goes back to iron, coal and steel plants in the 1800s, but development remained stagnant because of catastrophic floods that occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. The city today has a population of just over 18,000, but Johnstown’s low home prices are drawing more residents to the area. “We’ve had a lot of people move in from out of town because of its low cost of living,” says Nicole Bailey, General Manager of Tony’s Sub Shop, a local business that’s been in the neighborhood since 1966. “It used to be more of a small town where everyone knew each other, but it’s become more urban over time.”

Roxbury Park has free concerts throughout the year at The Bandshell, an outdoor entertainment venue built in 1939. The park also holds local baseball tournaments and a dog festival in September. “We bring food out for some of the events there,” says Bailey. “The park is definitely a little hub for this community.”

Important to Know
Johnstown experienced catastrophic floods in 1889, 1936 and 1977. In the mid-20th century, the city constructed river walls around the Conemaugh River in an attempt to curb flooding, but the area's geography still makes it highly prone to water buildup.
The Johnstown Flood Museum has exhibits that explain the impact of the historic flood.
The Johnsontown Flood Museum holds on to the historic events etched into Johnstown's past.
