Education and health programs offered in Johnstown neighborhoods
Once the site of a victory garden during World War II, Walnut Grove, 2 miles from downtown Johnstown, continues to provide for its residents. The gardens were meant to ensure civilians had a fresh supply of produce during wartime. Today, Walnut Grove supplies a similar safety net through low-income housing units, a homeless shelter and city-wide programs to help those with medical and childcare needs. “We can transport anyone with a Medical Access card to a medical appointment," says Dawn Popovich, the community services director for the Community Action Partnership of Cambria County. "We can take them to checkups, the pharmacy, therapy and health screening – any type of medical-related appointment.” The Community Action program, in partnership with the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania, offers other services to the Johnstown community, such as early education programs and the Women Infants and Children Nutrition Program. “WIC provides nutrition and support for pregnant women and young children,” says Popovich. Like the victory garden, Walnut Grove continues to care for its residents through these programs.

Foursquares and minimal traditionals starting at $30,000
The Johnstown Expressway borders the area, though residences are separated from the roadway by an outcropping of mature trees. Homes have small yards beside narrow sidewalks bordering winding roadways. Because the neighborhood is hilly, many houses have steps leading down to the sidewalk. Solomon Homes, low-income apartments through the Johnstown Housing Authority, make up most of the dwellings in the area. Foursquare and minimal traditional houses are common styles in the neighborhood. Fixer-uppers and homes close to the expressway range from $30,000 to $55,000, while builds farther from the expressway range from $60,000 to $100,000. Homeowners may apply for weatherization to save on energy bills through the Center for Community Action. “State-eligible applicants can apply to add insulation to their home,” says Wendy Melius, the executive director of the Center for Community Action. “There’s older housing stock in those areas, so they’re not well insulated. We can get in there and put insulation in.”

Communal backyard at Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy
The Solomon Community Playground has a blue-and yellow play structure with metal swings and park benches on a stretch of greenery across from the Solomon Homes. Nearby is a Tenant Association Community Garden with seven plots for residents. In a neighboring community, the Maple Park Playground has a basketball court, swing set, a colorful play structure and walking trails, as well as a covered picnic area. The largest park in the area is Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy, a privately owned public green space that hosts events throughout the year, such as a Wine Festival in September and garden seminars on the weekends. Volunteers maintain the space, and it is popular for its dog park. Many homes near the park have limited back and front yard space, so Sandyvale acts as a communal backyard.
