Walnut Grove
Neighborhood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania
Cambria County 15902
Foursquares and minimal traditionals starting at $30,000
The Johnstown Expressway borders the area, though residences are separated from the roadway by an outcropping of mature trees. Homes have small yards beside narrow sidewalks bordering winding roadways. Because the neighborhood is hilly, many houses have steps leading down to the sidewalk. Solomon Homes, low-income apartments through the Johnstown Housing Authority, make up most of the dwellings in the area. Foursquare and minimal traditional houses are common styles in the neighborhood. Fixer-uppers and homes close to the expressway range from $30,000 to $55,000, while builds farther from the expressway range from $60,000 to $100,000. Homeowners may apply for weatherization to save on energy bills through the Center for Community Action. “State-eligible applicants can apply to add insulation to their home,” says Wendy Melius, the executive director of the Center for Community Action. “There’s older housing stock in those areas, so they’re not well insulated. We can get in there and put insulation in.”Communal backyard at Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy
The Solomon Community Playground has a blue-and yellow play structure with metal swings and park benches on a stretch of greenery across from the Solomon Homes. Nearby is a Tenant Association Community Garden with seven plots for residents. In a neighboring community, the Maple Park Playground has a basketball court, swing set, a colorful play structure and walking trails, as well as a covered picnic area. The largest park in the area is Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy, a privately owned public green space that hosts events throughout the year, such as a Wine Festival in September and garden seminars on the weekends. Volunteers maintain the space, and it is popular for its dog park. Many homes near the park have limited back and front yard space, so Sandyvale acts as a communal backyard.Complimentary breakfast and lunch at Johnstown schools
The Greater Johnstown School District receives a C-minus from Niche. Children may attend Greater Johnstown Elementary School and Greater Johnstown Middle School, both of which receive a C-minus. Students advance to Greater Johnstown Senior High School, which receives a C. The school district participates in Community Eligibility Provisions, a meal service that schools in low-income areas may provide. Through this program, Johnstown schools serve free breakfast and lunch.Fresh produce at Johnstown Farmers Market
The Johnstown Farmers Market is in downtown Central Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Friday from May to October. The market takes SNAP and offers fresh produce and live music for patrons to enjoy. Religious services are held at Beulah Community Church, Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren and Homestead Avenue United Methodist.Commuters use bus stops and the Johnstown Expressway
While the neighborhood is walkable, the area is largely car-dependent. Using the main thoroughfares, the Johnstown Expressway and Bedford Street, residents may reach the city center in five to six minutes. Public transportation is also an option; bus are found on Solomon, Jacoby and Bedford streets. The John Murtha Johnstown Cambria County Airport is 6 miles away.Locally owned candy store since 1934
Chocolate turtles, peanut butter cups, cordial cherries and other chocolates may be purchased at O’Shea’s Candies. This family-owned confectionary has been making chocolates in Walnut Grove since 1934. T N C’s Lounge serves bar food in a Tudor Revival-style building near the expressway. Downtown Johnstown has even more shopping and dining options. Groceries may be purchased at Family Dollar and Randy’s Bi-Lo Foods.Important to know
The Johnstown Expressway can become busy and loud for residents living nearby. Johnstown is a flood-prone area, and the Solomon Run River flows through it. The river is reinforced on both sides with high concrete walls.
