Joplin suburb near KCU's Medical School, Freeman Hospital West
Located in Joplin's southwest quadrant, Blendville South is one piece of the city's recovery story following the destructive 2011 tornado. This neighborhood blends older homes on the north half with newer homes on the south side, part of the tornado path. The reality show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition participated in the recovery effort, building seven homes for seven families. Today the neighborhood is once again a thriving area walkable to a neighborhood green space and local restaurants on Main Street. It's also convenient to Kansas City University's Osteopathic Medical School and Freeman Hospital West, both situated just south. "Medical students are here for three years and they like to be as close to the school as possible," says Tammy Trimble, Realtor with Keller Williams Elevate and Joplin resident for about 35 years.

Homes with character from the 19th century through today
Blendville South has single-family homes arranged into neat grids. Twenty-fourth Street is a dividing line between the older and newer properties. To the north are gable-front bungalows with front porches, dating as far back as the late 19th century. New construction is popping up throughout the neighborhood as older houses are torn down to make way for new ones. On the south side are New Traditional properties built after 2011, some of which have driveways and attached two-car garages. Whether old or new, homes tend to sit close to the street with a small strip of grass out front. Sidewalks are a few steps out the front door, leading north and south through the neighborhood. The seven Extreme Makeover homes add some architectural intrigue to South Connor Avenue. Each has a different theme, from "beach" to "feng shui." "Each one of them has a very unique look," Trimble says. "It makes for a neat street — there's nothing cookie-cutter about it." Prices range from $150,000 to $250,000.

Cunningham Park is a favorite place to play
Cunningham Park has been the go-to green space in this neighborhood since the early 1900s. Extreme Makeover helped rebuild the park after it was destroyed by the tornado. Today, two playgrounds offer different ways to play, with tall towers and twisty slides and a pretend cityscape. The aquatic center has a public pool with several twisty slides and a shallower pool for younger kids to splash around. Paved pathways wind around the park's open grassy spaces and water features, offering a space to exercise or reflect. The park has various tributes to the victims, volunteers and survivors of the tornado, including a water feature with 38 segments, representing the number of minutes the tornado touched the ground.
Residents enjoy the many water features found at Cunningham Park.
Cunningham Park is home to a number of memorials dedicated to the 2011 Joplin tornado.

Career academies at Joplin High
Students are part of the Joplin School District, which earns an overall B-minus, but they may fall under one of two pipelines, depending on their location in the neighborhood. Students on the west side may start out at Cecil Floyd Elementary before moving on to North Middle. Both schools earn a C-plus. Alternatively, students on the east side may start out at Irving Elementary, which earns a C-plus, before moving on to South Middle, which earns a B. Regardless of location, Joplin students typically graduate from Joplin High, which earns a C-plus. There, teens may choose between five career academies including Health Services, Arts and Communication and Human Services. Kansas City University-Joplin became Missouri's first medical school campus in almost 50 years when it opened in 2017. The school has Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Biosciences and Dental Medicine on one campus, located less than a mile south.

Main Street a straight shot to downtown Joplin
Thanks to its location along Main Street, this neighborhood offers an easy commute downtown. Main Street leads directly to the city center, less than 2 miles north. Thanks to sidewalks, this is also a walkable neighborhood, although they're more common on north-south streets than east-west streets. Public transportation is lacking in Joplin, which discontinued its trolley service in 2022. The city does provide rides on demand via the Metro Area Public Transit System.
