Spanish Mission-style homes stand out
This is a hilly neighborhood where early 20th-century homes and big trees add to an older, quiet vibe. Tudor and bungalow-style houses date back to the 1920s and '30s. Spanish Mission homes stand out from typical Joplin architecture, with textured stucco exteriors, arched doorways and red tile roofs. Decorative landscaping adds to the curb appeal and character. Fenced-in front yards are carved by narrow, winding walking paths and speckled by flowers and trees. Homes here can range from $120,000 to $300,000. One standout property here is the historic Bonnie and Clyde garage apartment, where the infamous duo holed up and eventually stood off against law enforcement in 1933. Newer homes also dot the neighborhood. The Jackson Hills development features 11 rental homes with one, two or three bedrooms. "Some of our med students aren't from our area, so being in a closed, fenced-in community setting, they feel safe," Bland says. The fire station on the neighborhood's east side creates frequent noise.Peaceful walks at Mercy Park
Two green spaces are less than 2 miles northwest. Cunningham Park spans 8 acres, and was quickly rebuilt after being destroyed 2011 tornado. It gained an aquatic center with areas for younger and older kids to play, including a shallow splash area and a deep end with six water slides. The city is currently building new sand volleyball courts in place of one of the park's old playgrounds. Kids can still play on the existing playground with tall treehouse towers an twisty slides. Just south of Cunningham, Mercy Park is a passive green space that was built on the site of the former St. John's Hospital, which was also destroyed by the tornado. Here, trails weave through hilly, grassy areas and water features.Freeman Hospital West is Joplin's largest hospital
The Freeman Health system is the largest employer and healthcare provider for the surrounding area. Freeman Hospital West, a 339-bed teaching hospital, is the largest in the system, with a Level II trauma center open seven days a week, a 41-bed intensive care unit and a three-story heart and vascular institute. The hospital cared for more than 1,700 patients in the aftermath of the EF5 tornado that struck the city in 2011. Kansas City University opened its Joplin medical school campus in 2017, establishing Missouri's first medical school campus in nearly 50 years. KCU added college of dental medicine in 2023.Crazy Llama Coffee has espresso on the go
