Affordable cottages, bungalows and Minimal Traditionals
Mohaska's northern block has New Traditional homes where the tornado touched down. South of that are Tudor-inspired cottages, Minimal Traditionals and bungalows from the early-to-mid 20th century. Many are situated on smaller lots with sloping front yards and stairwells leading up to front doors. Prices range from $148,000 to $260,000. "They're not all brand new builds, so it's more affordable for those in medical school for 4 or 5 years who aren't necessarily ready to go in and put $300,000 toward a brand new home, Kaughman says." Sidewalks are situated throughout the area, contributing to the culture of walking.After-school tutoring at Irving Elementary
Mohaska falls within the Joplin School District, which zones students to specific elementary and middle schools based on address. In this neighborhood, kids typically attend Irving Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Volunteers help boost student achievement through the after-school TREK tutoring program. South Middle School also serves the area, earning a B-minus. All students in the city attend Joplin High School, which earns a C-plus. Teens can work toward an associate degree along with their high school diploma. Kansas City University oversees osteopathic medicine and dental medicine colleges within the neighborhood.American classics at Tropicana Bar and Grill
Shopping and dining are a highlight here as Main Street adds more and more businesses. In addition to fast food options, the local restaurants are neighborhood hot spots. "You've got hole-in-the-wall restaurants down there that are thriving — every day you drive by, it seems like they're packed," Kaughman says. Tropicana Bar and Grill serves signature burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and drinks in a spacious two-story dining area. Locals also fill up the four outdoor patios. Crazy Llama Coffee opened here in 2023, building on the success of its original Webb City location. It's a popular spot for espresso drinks and handheld breakfast items. Aldi and Walmart Neighborhood Market are just beyond Mohaska's western border.Races for a cause at Mercy Park
Mercy Park has also transformed into a space for community gatherings. For 13 years, it hosted the Joplin Memorial Run, honoring the memory of the 161 people who lost their lives in the tornado. The event took its last lap in 2024. Mercy has also hosted the Paws for the Cause 11K Ruck March, benefiting the Heartland Canines for Veterans nonprofit. The park shines during the holidays. Each December, area businesses decorate and display evergreens at the annual Holiday Tree Trail. The event features a live performance, hot chocolate and a visit with Santa.Interstate 44 goes to Springfield
Joplin is a medical hub for the four states area. Every day, Mercy Hospital and the Freeman Health System serve 250,000 people from Missouri and the surrounding states. Freeman Hospital West is a 339-bed teaching hospital with a Level II trauma center and a 41-bed intensive care unit. Mohaska offers direct routes through Joplin and beyond. West 32nd Street leads to Freeman Hospital West, while Main Street leads to downtown Joplin, 2 miles north. Main Street also goes to Joplin Regional Airport, about 8 miles north. Interstate 44 is a nearby route to Springfield, 71 miles east.Mercy Park symbolizes strong community spirit
Mercy Park is a symbol of Joplin's tornado recovery. This park opened in 2017 on the original site of Mercy Hospital, which was destroyed in 2011. The city turned the site into a natural grassy landscape dotted by 30 species of deciduous trees, prairie flowers and a fishing pond. Paved pathways loop around the park. Between 2019 and 2024, local Rotary Clubs planted 30 bronze sculptures along the walkways. A butterfly mural in the park honors the city's transformation. "Every time you drive by, that's what you think about," Kaughman says. "That was a time when the community was at a low based on what everybody had lost, and it's a visual of how in dark times the community can come together and really uplift each other."
