Central Joplin neighborhood with green space at the center
Parr Hill Park is a central Joplin neighborhood where green space is the biggest landmark. This relaxed, residential area has a 2.4-acre park at its center. Both the park and homes here were rebuilt after the 2011 Joplin tornado, creating a landscape of new infrastructure in this once-established neighborhood. Small businesses give this neighborhood an off-the-beaten path vibe, although it's less than 2 miles southeast of the city center. "A lot of businesses cater to the local people since they're not on the busy side of town where all the traffic is," says Brandi Hall, longtime Joplin resident and owner of Trackside Treasures, an antique market in the neighborhood.

Parr Hill Park is a popular weekend or afternoon hangout, walkable from practically anywhere in the neighborhood. Spanning 2.4 acres, it's a flat, open space dotted by trees. Here, basketball is a popular after-school pastime for neighborhood kids. Children can cool down under the water sprayer or slide down the playground slides, while parents supervise from shaded tables. Contemporary homes from 2011 through today
Single-family homes surround the park, many of which have a direct view of the green space. Since this area was destroyed by the tornado, most properties are newer than 2011, while there are also some midcentury ranch-style homes. Most lots are occupied, but new construction continues. These homes have a contemporary look with a double gable-front design and attached two-car garages. Others mimic more traditional styles such as Cape Cods and Tudors. Prices range from $210,000 to $270,000. This neighborhood's mature trees have yet to grow back, giving the neighborhood an open, airy feel without much shade. Although there aren't many sidewalks, it's a quick trek to neighborhood amenities.
Most homes in Parr Hill Park are newer construction built after 2011.

Antique lovers flock to Trackside Treasures
Parr Hill Park's small businesses help give this neighborhood its character. Big R's BBQ has been a favorite Joplin restaurant since 1998. The restaurant closed in 2020 and opened under new ownership in 2021. It still serves the original menu items, including smoked meats and an assortment of homemade pies. Trackside Treasures is a popular antique market located on the railroad tracks that border the neighborhood's west side. The store is divided into various vendor booths, with a wide assortment of secondhand trinkets. "Antiquing is a real popular pastime around here," Hall says. "A lot of people are interested in roaming these types of stores looking for their next great find." Rangeline Road is a commercial hub 1.5 miles east, with major retailers such as Aldi.

Early college experience at Joplin High
The Joplin School District serves this neighborhood with two different pipelines. Students on the east side may attend Eastmorland Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, and East Middle, which gets a C-plus. Alternatively, kids on the west side can start at the C-plus-rated Irving Elementary before moving on to the B-rated South Middle. Joplin High serves all Joplin students and earns a C-plus. Located less than a mile south, the high school offers many opportunities for postsecondary experience, including 64 Dual Credit, Advanced Placement, and honors courses, and Career and Technical Education courses through the Franklin Technology Center.
The neighborhood is adjacent to the Joplin Public Library, which hosts popular programs for all ages, such as a summer reading program, which had over 1,500 participants in 2024.
Mixing and mingling at First Friday WineShare
With a central location in the city, Parr Hill Park is also centrally located to downtown Joplin events, which take place weekly, monthly or annually. Wine lovers bring their favorite bottle to First Friday WineShare, hosted by the Downtown Joplin Alliance. There, visitors can try a new wine, network and mingle over a glass of red or white. Parr Hill Park has also seen its fair share of events. In 2024 the Joplin Police Department hosted a block party at the park, featuring free hotdogs and drinks and an up-close look at some of the emergency vehicles.
Transportation
This neighborhood lacks sidewalks and bike lanes, but it's a generally low-traffic area. The neighborhood is bordered to the south by East 20th street, which may create some noticeable noise. The road connects with Main Street, leading north toward the city center, for a total trip of 1.7 miles. The road also leads directly east to shopping along Rangeline Road. Joplin does not have a public bus system, but it does have a curb-to-curb ride service, operating by appointment.
