Country vibe within the Joplin city limits

On the far southern reaches of Joplin, Silver Creek offers a private, country vibe despite falling within the city limits. Originally a village, it was incorporated by Joplin as recently as 2012. Midcentury homes are separated by sprawling lots and towering oak trees in this rolling, wooded area. Despite the distance, neighbors tend to know their neighbors since this is a community of more owner-occupants than renters, says Larry Allgood, broker and owner of Larry Allgood Real Estate, who has been selling homes in the area since 1996. That familiarity also lends itself to safety. The neighborhood has a low CAP index crime score of 1 out of 10. "Everyone knows who is coming in and out," Allgood says.

Ranch and split-level homes on sprawling lots

Midcentury ranch-style and split-level homes sit on a half-acre to a full acre of land. "You've got the space for kids to play without worrying about traffic," Allgood says. "If you have dogs, your yard is big enough for them." Some residents also build two- or three-car garages for additional parking and workshop space. Trees often cover entire properties with shade, from front yards to backyards. Built mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, hardboard was a common siding material. Today, the siding may need replacement due to water damage. Only three homes were on the market in 2024, listed for between $270,000 and $400,000.

Shops and restaurants galore on south Rangeline

The southern end of Rangeline is the busiest section of Joplin's busiest commercial corridor. It has a slate of well-known shops and restaurants, including Sam's Club, Food 4 Less, Texas Roadhouse and Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen. "From Silver Creek, you're less than half a mile from everything that Rangeline has to offer," says Gary Mishler, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elevate. The list goes on as more businesses find a home here, including a new Chick-fil-A restaurant. The Four States chain Bricktown Brewery is one popular spot on this end of town, serving a hearty meatloaf dinner and local beer.

Easy access to I-44

Silver Creek is well-connected despite its remote vibe. Rangeline Road and Interstate 44 are two major roadways bordering the neighborhood's west and north sides, respectively. Rangeline leads into the main retail and restaurant scene, while I-44 leads to Springfield, located 70 miles east. Joplin's medical district is also located on this end of town. Two miles west, Mercy Hospital is a 242-bed hospital with a Level II trauma center. Joplin Regional Airport is 11 miles north for out-of-town travel, offering direct flights to Denver and Chicago on United Airlines. Public transportation will become available again in February 2025 when Joplin resumes the Sunshine Lamp Trolley service, which consists of three bus routes throughout town.

Block parties and art walks in downtown Joplin

Residents venture to Joplin's center for special events. Anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 locals flock to downtown Joplin for Third Thursday, a monthly block party with vendors, food trucks and performance stages. The themes vary from March through October, from Dog Days of Summer to Harvest Festival. Joplin also spotlights 30 local artists of all ages at the First Thursday Art Walk. Visitors peruse various works at the downtown galleries and stores to the sounds of live music.

Nature hikes at Wildcat Park

Wildcat Park offers a unique slice of nature without venturing far from the city. Open from dawn to dusk, this area is a magnet for its walking trails, which range from easy to moderate in difficulty and traverse through different ecosystems. The mile-long Bluff Trail poses a more challenging trek from a river valley up to a bluff. Wildcat is an expansive city park containing the largest percentage of the world's chert glades — a flint-like rock with rainbow hues — found here in a dry, desert-like habitat. Within the park, the Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center hosts a variety of activities for all ages, including nature bingo, fly fishing lessons and ornament-making in December.
