Jordan, Els among big-name residents
Bear’s Club opened on the last day of 1999, and over the past 25 years, it has become one of the most sought-after golf communities in the country, attracting the type of big-name buyers who can afford the pinnacle of luxury living. Among its most well-known residents are four-time major champion Ernie Els and six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan, who recently purchased a $16 million home here. “When a customer calls me and says price is no option, I tell them they have two choices – live on the ocean or live at Bear’s Club,” Marotta says. Housing prices range from $2.6 million for a four-bedroom villa to $42 million for a 23,000-square-foot Palladian-style waterfront mansion. In between is a collection of stunning multimillion-dollar homes featuring Spanish- and French-influenced architectural styles and ranging in size from 3,100 to more than 10,000 square feet. “What’s great about the housing is that it’s very low density. The east side is all estate homes on 1-acre lots fronting the golf course,” Marotta says.Initial membership fees can be as much as $500,000
Homes are built around a meticulously maintained 18-hole layout that spans more than 7,100 yards of gently rolling, wooded terrain strategically populated with water hazards and more than 100 bunkers. Homeowners are not automatically granted club membership. Prospective members must apply, and it can take up to two years to be accepted, says Matthew Dugow, a real estate agent with Compass whose portfolio includes properties in the community. Membership requires an initiation fee of $350,000 to $500,000, and annual fees range from $20,000 to $30,000. Nicklaus’ wife, Barbra, had input into the design of the course’s sprawling, multi-story clubhouse, whose Mediterranean motif is the inspiration behind much of the residential aesthetic. Outside of the community, residents have access to Jupiter’s buzzy waterfront. Residents can store their boats at Cypress Island Marina and The Bluffs Marina, both within minutes of the community. The Benjamin School offers premier private education
Nicklaus is a trustee emeritus of The Benjamin School. Located south of the community, it is one of the premier co-educational private day schools in the country. It consists of a lower, middle and upper school on two campuses in North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. Opened in 1960, The Benjamin School serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The student-teacher ratio is 8-to-1. The area’s public-school options include Lighthouse Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche; Beacon Cove Intermediate and Independence Middle schools, both rated A-minus; and William T. Dwyer High, an A-rated school.Gated, roaming security protects residents
Getting in and out of Bear’s Den is easy for residents, but there are only two access points, and there is not only gated security, but roaming security throughout the community. Donald Ross Road on the community’s southern edge provides direct access to the oceanfront less than 3 miles away. Florida State Road A1A runs adjacent to the community’s west side and allows for convenient travel up and down the coast. Palm Beach International Airport is about 18 miles away.1000 North attracts an upscale clientele
The second floor of the clubhouse features a dining room, but it is open only to members. However, most residents have their own personal chefs, Marotta says. As for dining out, Jordan and Els are partners in 1000 North, an upscale restaurant on the Jupiter waterfront. “You can have dinner overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and watch the boats go by,” Marotta says. “Many of the top 100 golfers in the world live in the area, so they will often frequent the restaurant. And you have to remember that Palm Beach County is basically a winter surrogate for the New York area, so if you don’t have a good restaurant, you’re not going to be in business for long. Because all these guys have personal chefs, when I see a place that has a lot of Bear’s Club members, I know it’s good.” When home-cooking is on the menu, residents have access to a nearby Publix. There are 16 retail stores and eight restaurants at Harbourside Place, an upscale retail center in downtown Jupiter.
