Neighborhood in Kalamazoo County
Kalamazoo County 49004, 49007
Prospective buyers will find ranch-style homes and available farmland
Mature trees and colorful flower beds are near many homes here. Some residents enjoy spacious lots with amenities like soccer and basketball goals. Northwood’s housing includes ranch-style, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and traditional homes. The neighborhood also has pockets of Cape Cods and a few manufactured home communities made up of renters and owners. “There’s also a significant amount of farmland that is really primed to be developed,” Combs says. “Around Kalamazoo, it’s hard to find available land that’s suitable for new buildings — both homes and commercial — but Northwood has that.” Homes here mostly go from $150,000 to $350,000.Downtown Kalamazoo’s dining scene is a few miles away
Although there are no restaurants in Northwood, the neighborhood is less than 10 minutes from downtown Kalamazoo’s bustling dining, bar and entertainment scene. Downtown staples include the upscale Brick and Brine, which is popular for cocktails and brick-oven meals. Bell’s Eccentric Cafe has a spacious beer garden, and its menu includes burgers and poutine. The brewpub is affiliated with the city’s Bell’s Brewery, well known for its Oberon Ale and Hearted IPA brands. Maru Sushi & Grill is another eatery in this old industrial area. ALDI on Gull Road is one of the nearest grocery stores. “It’s pretty much small town living over here, but we’re a 5-minute drive to literally everything,” says Angela Scruggs, community manager for Northwood’s Hillcrest Acres mobile home community.Markin Glen Park draws swimmers and mountain bikers
The 160-acre Markin Glen Park has a campground with over 30 utility hookup sites. Its two lakes draw swimmers during the summer, while mountain bikers and hikers enjoy taking the trails in the woods. The park also provides access to the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail, a more than 20-mile path that reaches areas like downtown Kalamazoo. The nearby Kalamazoo River offers kayaking and canoeing outings. Children in Northwood may also sign up for Little League, which is based at the G Avenue fields. Combs says the games double as community gatherings. “Families will go out and have a day in the park,” he says. “It really is a sort of community focused thing.”Northwood Elementary serves the neighborhood
Students here may attend Kalamazoo Public Schools or the Parchment School District. The community is home to Northwood Elementary School, which gets a B-minus from Niche and serves prekindergarten to third grade students. Students may then go to North Elementary School, which receives a C-plus. Other schools serving the area include Hillside Middle and Kalamazoo Central High. Hillside gets a C from Niche, while Kalamazoo Central receives a B-minus. The Kalamazoo district offers the Kalamazoo Promise, a scholarship that can cover all college tuition costs. Graduates need to meet attendance and residency conditions to get the scholarship.Craft beer fans go to downtown Kalamazoo for Oberon Day
With downtown Kalamazoo 3 miles south, Northwood is close to some of the area’s biggest events. One of them is the annual Oberon Day, which celebrates the national release of Bell’s Brewery’s popular Oberon Ale. Many come to Bell’s Eccentric Cafe in March to enjoy the brewery’s seasonal wheat ale. The event also features several hours of live music and activities like carnival games.Improvements are coming to U.S. Highway 131 area
Kalamazoo’s Metro has a few bus stops along Douglas Avenue. Commuters otherwise may travel on U.S. Highway 131. The highway goes directly to Grand Rapids, about 45 miles north. The U.S. 131 corridor is also undergoing improvements to better position the township for growth. “We’re really preparing our township for construction,” Combs says. Located just outside the neighborhood, the Ascension Borgess Hospital provides the nearest major medical facility. The neighborhood is also about 20 miles north of the Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport. The area is prone to major lake-effect snowfalls.
