Young families buy homes in Southside
The Southside neighborhood features a variety of housing options, many of which are older homes that have been remodeled. “I would say traditionally, it’s more of a blue-collar area,” says Ben Barber, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty - Kalamazoo Market Center. “There is a lot of revitalization happening here. It attracts younger families and offers many starter homes due to more accessible pricing compared to neighborhoods like Winchell.” Housing styles include Colonial Revival homes priced between $312,500 and $410,000, Folk Victorian homes ranging from $325,000 to $475,000, and Cape Cod and Craftsman styles around $290,000. Dutch Colonial homes, ranging from $230,000 to $285,000, add to the architectural diversity. The median home price is $129,900. “We see a lot of flippers interested in these neighborhoods because they can buy homes cheaper,” Barber adds.Get silly during the Do-Dah Parade
While there are no big annual events within the neighborhood, Southside residents participate in some of Kalamazoo’s biggest citywide celebrations each year. Since 1984, the Do-Dah Parade, held in June, kicks off the summer with local businesses and community residents coming together for a fun and humorous event. Each August, the city hosts the Kalamazoo County Youth Fair and Family Festival, featuring food, games, a petting zoo, horseback riding, and educational activities.
