Neighborhood yard sales in West Main Hill

The West Main Hill Community Yard Sale brings neighbors together annually. In 2022, the neighborhood introduced its first "play street" on Peake Road and Circle Street, closing them off to vehicle traffic to provide a safe area for children to play, addressing residents' concerns about speeding and a lack of sidewalks in the area.

“West Main Hill is definitely more, older, larger homes,” says Realtor Ben Barber of Keller Williams Realty - Kalamazoo Market Center. “We see a lot of stuff built in the late 1800s, early 1900s in that area. There are some historic homes in that area. There is also Kalamazoo College in that area, so you see a lot of students that live there,” Barber says. Colonial Revival homes are priced between $485,000 and $595,000, while Queen Anne Victorian homes range from $532,000 to nearly $5 million. American Four Square homes start at $225,000, and Tudor Revival homes are around $249,900. Midcentury modern homes are priced at approximately $261,000, and Cape Cod homes are about $295,000. Prairie-style homes are around $420,000. The median home price is $447,000. The neighborhood's large yards, fences, and tree-lined streets enhance its appeal, although the market currently offers few homes for sale.

Take Interstate 94 to Detroit

West Main Hill sits near Interstate Highway 94, providing easy access to Detroit and Chicago. The neighborhood is 1.5 miles from downtown Kalamazoo and 5.6 miles from the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. Residents can also ride the Kalamazoo Metro public bus around the city.

Packaging plant contributing to high levels of gas in Kalamazoo air

A May 2023 report from the Michigan Department of Human Services confirmed hazardous air quality in parts of Kalamazoo. High levels of hydrogen sulfide gas were found around the Graphic Packaging International paper mill and the city’s wastewater treatment plant, posing long-term health risks to residents, especially children. The neighborhood has a CAP Crime Score of four.
