Foxcroft & Glen Arbor offers peaceful living near city perks
In Foxcroft & Glen Arbor, you’re never far from the best that Kansas City has to offer. With its western boundary right on the state line, this almost entirely residential southside neighborhood is only a mile from a pristine, renowned country club, and it's the same distance from one of the metro area’s biggest parks. This location allows for quiet living, without forgoing convenience. “This is a great neighborhood,” says Katie Scurlock, Realtor for Malfer & Associates. “Homes are typically larger and more spread out.”
Spacious lots and traditional homes built in the 1960s and ’70s
These serene, sprawling properties are just as convenient as the overall community, too. Most homes here – traditionals built in the late 1960s and ’70s – boast lots of at least a quarter-acre, making for ample backyard and play space, as well as long driveways leading into two-car garages and wide back porches. They tend to sell for $300,000 and up, and owners typically pay monthly HOA fees between $5 and $15.
Alpha Montessori and Barstow School anchor the southeast corner
One of the neighborhood’s biggest draws is the private school making up its southeastern corner. Open since 1962, Alpha Montessori serves prekindergarten and kindergarten with a self-paced, self-discovery-driven mission targeting four key elements: sensorial, practical life, language and mathematics. The arts are incorporated into weekly schedules, too. Another highly rated private institution, The Barstow School, sits just across the southern border with an A-plus Niche rating, a 1:1 technology program and a STEM-driven curriculum. Public school students attend Red Bridge Elementary, rated B-plus by Niche and focused on collaboration, problem-solving and real-world application. It feeds into Center middle and high schools.
Proximity to Minor Park and Hallbrook Country Club
Large properties allow for at-home recreation, and one of the city’s largest green spaces is just 2 miles east. Spanning more than 235 acres, Minor Park offers everything from a royal-blue playset and a cricket area, to walking trails and courts for basketball, tennis and pickleball. An 18-hole municipal golf course – named Kansas City’s best in 2021 by The Pitch – makes up its western side, also offering a practice range and pro instruction.
More golf opportunities lie just over the Kansas border at the private Hallbrook Country Club, established in 1927. Though it’s best known for its 18-hole championship course, it has something for most athletic interests: a pool facility, seven lighted tennis courts and a pickleball court, and a full-service exercise center. The club also offers drinks and upscale fare, like pan-seared Chilean bass.
Local restaurants at Red Bridge Shopping Center
If you’re not in the mood for Hallbrook’s menu, residents tend to stop by Red Bridge Shopping Center, which holds almost 100% locally owned dining spots less than a mile east. One of the most popular, Caleb’s Breakfast & Lunch has all the classic morning-meal dishes, from pancakes to French toast, but specializes in those with a twist like breakfast tacos, three corn tortillas with your choice of meat, scrambled eggs, jack cheese and pico, served with chipotle ranch and potatoes. Its lunch menu is a little more casual, mostly offering lighter options like salads and wraps. Gluten-free dishes are also available.
For dessert, stroll down the strip to Cookies and Creamery, named the best ice cream shop in Missouri by Yelp in 2022. Known for its creamwiches – like the rainbow sprinkle, which has vanilla yogurt and sprinkles sandwiched between sugar cookies – this locally owned store also dishes out regular bowl or cone options and drinks like root beer floats. To make your own creations, head 3 miles south to Walmart Supercenter, the closest grocery store. Even with big-city attractions all around, Foxcroft & Glen Arbor still finds a way to maintain a peaceful aura.
