Leeds is more than a short cut

Situated between Stadium Drive and Cleaver Boulevard, some Kansas City locals pass through the Leeds neighborhood on their way to other places, while some drive over to simply attend a Chiefs game at the Arrowhead Stadium. However, there's so much more here than football or convenient throughways. While the neighborhood has rich industrial roots due to the railway development along the Blue River, it was more importantly referred to as "the Garden of Eden." Ripe with fruit trees, flowered fields and gardens, it became one of the first neighborhoods to sell properties outright to Black residents, specifically those wishing to raise cattle and crops on their own plot of land outside the hubbub of the historic Eighteenth and Vine corridor.

Bungalows on Freemont and Fuller

At first glance, Leeds looks small and mainly industrial, yet older homes built in the early and mid-1900s still sit along Freemont and Fuller Avenues, waiting for repair. Most homes along these two parallel roads sell between $100,000 and $135,000 and are either small ranches, bungalows or Cape Cods. La Casita Mobile Home Park is on the neighborhood's north side, where properties are sold for under $100,000.

"We have book fairs and readings all the time," says Jessie Caliman, a librarian at the Kansas City Central Public Library. "The original vault is now a movie theatre, which the kids enjoy." The University of Kansas is about 43 miles away.

Formerly known as Liberty Park

Residents in Leeds live close to the 3-mile-long Blue River Trailhead, which runs along the river, perfect for fishing or kayaking. In the adjacent Dunbar neighborhood, the historic Yvonne Starks Wilson Park, previously known as Liberty Park, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2022. The park hosts a large open field with a playground and basketball court. Brush Creek offers boat tours at a nearby pier and is the backdrop for both the Kauffman Legacy Park and shows at Frank A Theis Park Amphitheater.

Within minutes of Blue Ridge Crossing and Country Club Plaza

A little over 3 miles away, past Arrowhead Stadium, is Blue Ridge Crossing, with grocery stores like Walmart Supercenter and Cosentino's Apple Market, and a mix of fast-food chains and local eats like Pier 88 Boiling Seafood & Bar, known for its hush puppies and Low Country Boil. Across from Kauffman Stadium on Blue Ridge Cutoff is Dixon's Famous Chili Parlor, a local favorite for burgers topped with tomato-free chili. Heading west along Brush Creek, locals find the iconic Country Club Plaza, a sprawling shopping center with over 20 restaurants built in the Moorish style and an abundant nightlife can be found in the Power and Light District, with streets lined with loud clubs and packed music venues on the weekends. "It's the epicenter of our nightlife and only about 15 minutes away by bus or streetcar," Caliman says. "KC Live, this huge club, hosts this huge NYE celebration that attracts many people in and around the city."

Leeds' action-packed stadiums

There are events and entertainment spots unique to Leeds, like the Cool Crest Family Fun Center and its arcade and pizzeria; however, annual throwdowns take place all around the city, like the Jazz Walk of Fame at 18th and Vine, Midtown's St. Paddy's Day parade and Celebration at the Station, the Midwest's largest Memorial Day weekend event. Leeds is right by all the Kansas City professional sports action. It's just 2 miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where the Kansas City Chiefs play, and Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals.
