While the land of Linden Hills & Indian Heights is no longer used by pioneers traveling in covered wagons, the 120-acre Indian Creek Greenway still supplies the neighborhood with plenty of untouched terrain. Surrounding rows of midcentury dwellings are mature walnut trees, limestone bluffs and the namesake creek's rushing waters. The south Kansas City community is also located between Holmes Road and Interstate 435, adding an element of convenience to this otherwise forested enclave.

Sitting beneath the neighborhood’s dense canopy of trees are split levels with three bedrooms. These homes can have two-car garages, Colonial Revival-style shuttered windows or Tudor details. There are also ranch styles with sprawling or raised layouts. Another style in the area is asymmetrical Mansard homes with multiple dormered windows and low-sloping roofs. To live in Linden Hills & Indian Hills, expect to pay anywhere between $250,000 and $400,000, a range similar to a Kansas City home’s average $250,000 selling price.

As you walk the 10-mile Indian Creek Trail, you’ll cross gravel and paved paths sprinkled with signage explaining the greenway’s history as a former frontier route and a family owned sawmill. If you follow the trail for about 4 miles, you’ll end up at Leawood City Park, where you can cool off at the public pool or run around the playground, which has a plastic rock-climbing wall and zipline. Dogs will especially enjoy the aptly named 5-acre Leawoof Park, filled with obstacle courses and plenty of wide-open green space for unleashed fun. The 3&2 Baseball Club stadium is also in Linden Hills & Indian Heights. Since 1943, the club and its five diamonds have provided Kansas City with competitive youth baseball. The over 12-mile Blue River Parkway Trail also surrounds this sports hub. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders alike will enjoy this heavily forested trail with views of Alex George Lake, wildflower fields and native grasses.

Students in Linden Hills & Indian Heights can attend Indian Creek Elementary, where field day is celebrated with potato sack races, tug-of-war and a sidewalk chalk drawing competition. Then, they can go to Center Middle School. During Black History Month, the hallways are decorated with images and the words of important Black figures. Lastly, they attend Center High School. Students with grades in the top 10 percent of their academic class here are honored at the annual academic banquet.

The small shopping center on Holmes Road also means you’re never far from locally owned restaurant options. Start your morning with a creamy latte from Second Best Coffee and a freshly made glazed doughnut from Lamar’s, which has been a Kansas City go-to since 1960. You can also devour basil fried chicken and mango sticky rice at Thai House. About 2 miles away in the Watts Mill Plaza is a Price Chopper grocery store if you would rather make a meal at home. For non-food shopping, the Town Center Plaza is only 6 miles from Linden Hills & Indian Heights. The open-air shopping center has several retailers that can’t be found anywhere else in the Kansas City metropolitan area, including Crate & Barrel, Brook Brothers and Peloton.

With green spaces and south Kansas City amenities abound, Linden Hills & Indian Heights is a centrally located nature oasis.
