South KC subdivisions bonded by parkland and local businesses
South Kansas City’s Mission Lake is a sprawling suburban area bisected by some of the region’s most popular nature trails. The name “Mission Lake” is most associated with a cluster of townhomes around a private lake, though the general area’s housing landscape is diverse, with varied styles and sizes attractive to many types of homebuyers. Amenities here are all-encompassing, too—residents can spend weekends mountain biking, running around the children’s museum, shopping local boutiques or playing a round of golf without leaving the neighborhood.

Varied housing stock in Mission Lake area
The area’s subdivisions are built to suit many different lifestyles, and each enclave has its own unique identity. Communities like Somerset Gardens feature three- and four-bedroom homes built in the 1990s and 2010s, particularly attractive to young families. “There’s a park at the end of Charlotte Street; people walk their dogs back there, and their kids will play there,” says Luke Laser, an associate with RE/MAX State Line who has lived and sold in the area. “It’s an uber-friendly neighborhood. Everybody who moves in there is looking for the same thing.” Buyers seeking a little more breathing room can find 1950s homes on 1-acre lots on the east side, while those who want a smaller footprint can find townhomes by the neighborhood’s namesake lake.
Single-family homes typically range between $250,000 and $450,000, with price dependent on age and bedrooms. Ranch-style homes and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s are generally more affordable, while New Traditionals can occasionally jump up to $600,000. Mission Lake townhomes form the heart of the neighborhood, where residents pay HOA fees for exclusive access to a lake, two pools and a clubhouse. The community’s two- and three-bedroom units typically sell between $150,000 and $250,000.
Blue River Parkway Trails lead to Minor Park
Blue River Parkway Trails lead to Minor Park
Residents here can easily hop on the mixed-use trails running along the Blue River, which bisects the neighborhood. Paths are shaded by mature oak and sycamore trees, and hikers and mountain bikers can steal an occasional glance at a white-tailed deer. Some Blue River Parkway Trails connect to the neighborhood’s Minor Park, a 235-acre expanse of athletic amenities and open green space. The park features tennis and basketball courts, cricket grounds and new pickleball courts. Minor Park is also the home of the historic Old Red Bridge, where local couples affix locks to symbolize their love and commitment. Golfers can tee off at the Minor Park’s municipal course, or become a member at nearby Blue Hills Country Club.
Supporting local at Red Bridge Shopping Center
Homes here are within two miles of Red Bridge Shopping Center, a hub of locally owned businesses brought back to life through a 2017 renovation. Here, Crows Coffee serves breakfast burritos and a large menu of coffees and teas, though the place is best known for ample seating where neighbors and friends catch up. Shops include family-owned Euston Hardware and Made in KC, which sells locally themed products such as Chiefs apparel, Kansas City history books and Gates Bar-B-Q sauce.
The neighborhood is also within reach of several other shopping and dining destinations. “You’re close to a little area in Kansas City called Martin City, which has a brewery, steakhouse, and there’s a pizza place,” Laser says. Locals can grab a pint and enjoy live music at Coast to Coast Pub, owned by Martin City Brewing, or spend the afternoon stocking up at nearby Target, Lowe’s or Walmart. Price Chopper is the closest grocery store, sitting 3.5 miles away off Highway 71.
