In the early 1900s, Kansas Citians flocked to the Mount Hope area for Spring Valley Park's beautiful limestone quarry and flowing springs. While the water has since dried up, the park is still a popular destination. Today, you’ll find 26 acres of rolling green space filled with a ropes course playground and a small spray park. With a few other recreational hubs and U.S. Highway 71 at its core, Mount Hope is a close-knit and centrally located community.

Atop the hilly terrain of Mount Hope are towering American Foursquare homes built in the 1920s. These dwellings have wide front porches and four to five bedrooms. There are also a few smaller bungalows from the same decade. A home in Mount Hope can cost anywhere between $150,000 and $300,000, a range similar to a Kansas City home's average $250,000 selling price. “Because the homes are lower cost, it’s a popular area for renovations,” says ReeceNichols Realtor Kevin Sieker. “People like to keep the natural charm on the outside of houses, but they update the interiors.”

Aside from Spring Valley Park, residents can cast a line into the 3-acre Troost Lake, which is stocked with channel catfish. Head to Nelson C. Crews Square to practice your serve on the tennis court, shoot hoops on the basketball court or go for a jog with a view of downtown Kansas City. There is also a community garden and orchard along Highland Avenue. While the Metro Lutheran Ministry organizes it, anyone in the community can volunteer their time and tend to the urban farm. All the produce is distributed directly to residents or donated to the church food pantry.

The Lucile H. Bluford Branch of the Kansas City Public Library is also in the area. Named after a Kansas City journalist and advocate against segregation, this library has an extensive selection of African American literature. You can also participate in the anime club, arts and crafts workshops and various book clubs.

Children in Mount Hope can go to Faxon Elementary, which focuses on developing strong literacy skills in its students. For example, the Lead to Read program enlists volunteers to read with children one-on-one every week. Then, they attend Central Middle School, where AmeriCorps members are there to help students with classwork. Lastly, at Central High School, students can take courses in Early College Academy to earn an associate degree and high school diploma simultaneously. Additionally, students can join a variety of extracurriculars, including robotics, choir and wrestling.

Residents are nearby a few local eateries at nearby Linwood Square. Stop by Sharx for a fried chicken or fish dinner. The wings covered in lemon-pepper seasoning and the crispy catfish nuggets are especially popular among locals. If you would rather make a meal at home, a Sun Fresh Market is on Wabash Avenue. You can find a few more nationally known restaurants at Crown Center, only 2 miles away. The entertainment district also features an ice rink, a live performance theater and Legoland. More shopping options are about 4 miles away at the Country Club Plaza.

With acres of green space and all of midtown Kansas City’s hottest spots just a quick drive away, moving to Mount Hope means you’ll rarely want more.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
