It may be tiny, and its residents may not be the most affluent, but Parkview is rich in history. This renters' neighborhood 2 miles northeast of downtown Kansas City features several apartment complexes and a few single-family homes. Some renters receive subsidies.
"There's a ton of history here from music to civil rights to KC barbecue," says Nick Pickrell. A Realtor with the Standard KC Team, Pickrell's been selling homes in the area for four years. Parkview is within a mile of the iconic 18th and Vine jazz district, whose influence is honored by streets named after jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. It's also home to established medical institutions, including Kansas City's oldest medical school, Kansas City University, which has trained osteopathic physicians since 1916. The Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center opened in 1968 and is a busy clinic providing medical, dental, mental health and social services.

New apartments and town houses offer updated living spaces
Parkview residents rent apartments and town houses. New developments such as the Sam Rodgers Place, Quinlan Place and Quinlan Row have brought fresh living spaces into the area. These developments are part of an initiative to revitalize the Paseo Gateway district. "The Paseo is really beautiful with a lot of spots to hang out," Pickrell says.
The high concentration of subsidized housing here is partially in response to downtown KCMO revitalization efforts, including the new federal courthouse and the Federal Aviation Administration, says Jim Herrington, director of safety and campus operations for Kansas City University and retired KCPD police officer. "That redevelopment got rid of shelters and seedy bars downtown. And everything got pushed east," he said.
