Nature lovers and golfers have plenty of favorites close to home

For recreation, the 360-acre Jerry Smith Park is known for its rolling hills, wooded forests and a three-acre lake. Locals walk the Jerry Smith Park Trail to look at the wildflowers and the prairie. Nature lovers will appreciate the eared false foxglove flowers that bloom throughout the prairie. It is Missouri’s largest population of eared false foxglove flowers. Residents can also bring their dogs, on a leash, of course. Eagles’ Landing Golf Course features an 18-hole championship golf course and is known for its 69 bunkers that have proven to be a challenge to golfers who hit the course. For a more active recreational experience, residents can visit Volleyball Beach. Located five miles from Richards Gebaur, this beach has 14 sand courts, eight indoor air dome courts for colder months and a bar and grill.

Jess and Jim’s and Coast to Coast Pub anchor the food scene

For dining out, residents can head to East 135th Street for some notable restaurants. Jess and Jim’s Steak House has been open since 1938. Monday through Saturday, from 11 am to 3 pm, locals can stop in for lunch steaks. For dinner, they can order larger premium steaks or hand-breaded and fried frog legs that locals can get with mashed potatoes, a house salad and garlic toast. Jess and Jim’s Steak House also offers raw steaks to go that can be shipped all over the country. Across the street, residents can visit Coast to Coast Pub – Martin City Brewing Company. It is where locals can stop by for a drink and grab something off their menu that specializes in seafood, which ranges from Butternut Shrimp Pasta to classic Fish and Chips. On Wednesdays, Coast to Coast Pub hosts Oyster Night. Over Memorial Day Weekend, the brewery hosts the Memorial Day Block Party, where residents can come out for a crawfish boil, pizza, frozen cocktails, patio concerts and to try new ales.For grocery shopping and other needs, locals can visit the Walmart on 133rd Street, which is about 6 miles away. As an alternative to Walmart, they can also shop at Hy-Vee Grocery Store on 135th Street, which is 10 miles away.
