Artsy neighborhood inspired by Central Park elegance
Once the first stop on Kansas City's original streetcar, Southmoreland was developed in the 19th century by Kansas City Star publisher William Rockhill Nelson and mining magnate/developer August Meyer, inspired by New York’s Central and Riverside parks, which deeply connect residents to their natural surroundings. While originally home to Kansas City's wealthy upper class, the neighborhood has become a hub for art with museums and the Kansas City Art Institute, where Walt Disney studied, in the neighborhood. Further, former mansions have been subdivided into rental units, and new high-rise condos now sit alongside single-family homes. Despite the changes, the developer's vision remains true as Southmoreland blends urban residential experiences with accessibility to green spaces and recreation.

Mansions, American Foursquares and bungalows coexist with condos
Southmoreland has a mix of home styles and price points. Many homes were built in the early 20th century.
"It’s a timeless neighborhood with traditional classic architecture. You see a lot of stone detail, very much an estate-like feel," says Paul Galbrecht, a Realtor with KW Kansas City Metro who's been selling homes in the area for 8 years.
American Foursquares with stone columns and covered front porches sell for between $265,000 and $425,000. A one-bedroom single-story condo can sell for $125,000, while one- to two-bedroom condos in converted Neoclassical buildings and mansions sell for between $200,000 and $325,000. Large balconies on many of these homes and condos offer views of the annual Plaza lighting ceremony that takes place at sundown every Thanksgiving.

The original vision of the neighborhood is apparent in the parks within and around Southmoreland. Modest-sized Southmoreland Park has a small playground and space for walking. The Good Will Society puts on the free KC Shakes Heart of America Shakespeare Festival every summer in the park. The festival, which completed its 32nd season in 2024, aims to bring Shakespeare to life for people of all ages and backgrounds. The neighborhood also includes part of Robert Gillham Park, which has tennis and pickleball courts, a baseball diamond, sprayground and a trail. Mill Creek Park flanks Southmoreland’s east side, featuring a wide, paved pathway that winds through wooded parkland. The fountain at the southern tip can occasionally be subject to crowds as local protests have been held there, and wedding parties use the fountain as a backdrop for photos.
