Central Middle School and Southeast High School round out the neighborhood’s public school pipeline, each earning a C-minus from Niche. Students can apply to Border Star Montessori, one of KCPS’s signature schools, in the southern part of the neighborhood. The nearly 7-mile Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail, built along the city’s former streetcar line, runs along Brookside Boulevard just west of the neighborhood. “The Trolley Trail is two houses over from us," says Youngberg. “We see people out every day from young kids to joggers, to people with strollers to seniors.” The trail features both paved and natural surfaces, with some additional lighting. Brookside Park features pickleball courts, a playground, a ball diamond and rentable sand volleyball courts. When it snows, people flock here to speed down one of the city’s favorite hills for sledding. The neighborhood is half a mile from Loose Park, the city’s third-largest park at 75 acres. Nichols’ original vision, Brookside Shops has everything one could need, from boutiques to coffee shops to restaurants to grocery stores. “It’s the anchor of the community, says Sean Ackerson, head of the Brookside Business Association. “These neighborhoods wouldn’t be what they are without the shops.” Brookside HomeGrown coffee shop is a popular spot in the shopping center. “You have millionaires sitting beside blue-collar workers, and everyone just gets along,” says Brookside HomeGrown’s General Manager Amanda Vansickle. Grocery shopping is conveniently located in Brookside at Cosentino’s Market and Cosentino’s Price Chopper. There are also entertainment options in Brookside Shops, which serves as the eastern border between the neighborhood and Morningside. RideKC bus stops are located along Brookside Boulevard and Wornall Road. The Main Street Max line connects Wornall Homestead to the nearby neighborhoods of Brookside, Gregory and Waldo. Wornall Road, Brookside Boulevard and 63rd Street offer pathways to move around the city. Drivers can take 63rd Street to U.S. Highway 71 north to downtown or south to Interstate 435, which can take them anywhere in the metro area.Brookside St. Patrick’s Day Warm-Up Parade unites families, friends
Past and present Kansas Citians like to meet yearly at two big Brookside events: The St. Patrick’s Day Warm-Up Parade and the Art Annual. The warm-up parade occurs the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day and runs down 63rd Street. “There are lots of children and lots of floats. It’s a big, happy gathering,” Youngberg says.The city closes the streets for the juried Art Annual art show, where local restaurants put up booths alongside tents where local and regional artists display their works for sale. This highly social event attracts over 70,000 visitors per year. “Everybody talks about Brookside, but we like to differentiate ourselves in Wornall Homestead by having a lot of neighborhood social events,” says Youngberg. “We even have our new WoHo banners and bumper stickers.”
