Barksdale inspires new growth
While Keithville’s Staples region is considered a more rural part of Louisiana, the area is situated along US Route 171, putting residents within convenient proximity to commute into the lively Shreveport-Bossier City metro area. The commute into town usually takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic. In recent years, the area has experienced rapid growth. "We can attribute a lot of Northwest Louisiana's growth to the Barksdale Air Force Base expanding," says Shantelle Hamilton of The Hamilton Property Team Group in Shreveport, Louisiana. "It's brought a lot of new residents in between Keithville, Shreveport and Bossier." In February 2023, a new access road was opened for the Barksdale Air Force Base, combining Interstate 20 and Interstate 220. This multi-million dollar road development, along with other ongoing base growth projects, is aimed at accommodating over 600 new airmen and their families.
Cape Cods and grassy lots
The area offers a diverse range of modern single-family homes including simple bungalows, traditional ranch-style houses and multi-story colonial homes, most of which were built between 1970 and 1999. Newer subdivisions, like those on Maplewood Drive and Woolworth Road, don Cape Cod roofs and attached garages. The area is characterized by tall pines and large grassy lots, with older homes typically costing less than $500,000 and newer constructions ranging from $250,000 to $555,000.
Make SMART choices at Southwood High
Students can attend schools within the Caddo Parish district, which earns an overall B by Niche. They might start out at Keithville Elementary-Middle, then continue to Southwood High, both of which earn a C-plus. Keithville Middle offers a Danceline program, while Southwood High students can take advantage of Biotechnology Magnet and Science and Medicine Academic Research Training (SMART) programs.
Home to the world’s largest chimp sanctuary
For a day outdoors, the 8-acre Keithville Community Park, located on Keithville Elementary’s campus, is open to the public after school hours. Residents can play a friendly game on the baseball field or tennis courts, take a jog on the paved running path or bring kids to enjoy the playground. Nature enthusiasts will prefer The Eddie D. Jones “adventure park”, located 10 miles away from the Staples neighborhood. The heavily wooded park is ideal for mountain biking and horseback riding, offering over 10 miles of trails. What makes the park especially unique is its 200-acre chimpanzee sanctuary, The Chimp Haven, which is currently home to over 300 “retired” chimpanzees that were formerly used for scientific research. The sanctuary is currently the largest of its kind.
Make it a Tex-Mex night
El Patio Mexican Grill, located on Mansfield Road, has been serving up Tex-Mex dishes to Keithville residents for over 20 years. Locals rave about the fresh guacamole, live music (on Friday nights) and reasonable prices. For groceries, residents can stock up at the recently opened ALDI or Walmart Supercenter, both of which are also located on Mansfield Road. Locals can support smaller, independently owned businesses like the One Pretty Shoppe boutique and Emma Lane’s Soapery, a health and beauty store.
Let Route 171 take you there
Staples borders US Route 171 which residents can take to get to CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center, which is 12 miles from the neighborhood. The Shreveport Regional Airport is roughly 10 miles from the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
