Ships gathered in the harbor
In Kennebunk, sailboats line the beach, and local shops populate two vibrant downtown areas. A popular destination in the summer, the neighborhood has access to three beaches, historic architecture and great dining. While this vibrant coastal town attracts outsiders, Heidi Maynard, a Realtor with Pack Maynard and Associates, who lives in the area, says, “People move here because it’s a true community. People care about one another. They unite when someone needs help and rejoice when people succeed.”

Sand dunes, seabirds and saltwater
There are two contiguous conservation areas in the neighborhood. Madelyn Marx Preserve spans 24 acres, offers views of coastal salt marshes and provides habitat to sea birds and waterfowl. The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge features over 9,000 acres of diverse habitat, from rocky coastlines and sandy dunes to tidal estuaries and salt marshes. Migratory birds fly over tidal creeks, and visitors can wander wooden walkways along grassy marshes or through dense forests. The neighborhood also has access to three beaches – Gooch’s Beach, Middle Beach and Mother’s Beach – that require a parking permit from June to September. This string of beaches is connected by sidewalks and features sandy and rocky coastlines.
The Brick Store Museum on Main Street opened during the Great Depression and aims to preserve the heritage of the Kennebunks by collecting and displaying its material culture. Visitors can view everything from 19th-century paintings to shipbuilding tools.

A high-end beachfront community
Home prices start around $300,000 for a ranch-style property that might need renovations. In the $500,000 to $800,000 range, expect Colonial-Revival or modern Craftsman-style homes. Closer to downtown Kennebunk or Dock Square, homes reach into the millions and typically feature quintessentially New English features, like clapboard siding and gabled roofs. “Those who buy near the beach typically come for summer fun,” says Maynard. Properties near the coast also cost millions and tend to be vacation or second homes. In the spaces between these hubs, homes may sit on trafficked roads or in small subdivisions. “Summer Street is the main road between Kennebunk Beach and downtown Kennebunk,” says Maynard. “The houses along this way are restored ship captains’ homes.”
