Central, water-adjacent Kenosha community with classic homes
Many of Allendale’s Colonial Revival, folk and Tudor-style homes are on a central plat of land that was once Kenosha Country Club, a golf destination established in 1896. The golf greens are long gone, though outdoor recreation is still close to home. Walkable streets lead east to waterfront views and north to local haunts and annual events. “I think one of the biggest draws in Allendale is being close to Lake Michigan,” says Melissa Hua, a Kenosha resident and agent with Transfer Real Estate Services who sells homes in the neighborhood. “There's a lot of parks and beaches along the lakefront. I’ve also had buyers interested in being within walking distance to the downtown area, where there’s lots of bars, museums and restaurants.”
Early 1900s Kenosha homes on gridded streets
Allendale’s irregular grid is traced with sidewalks and canopied by mature statement trees. Some homeowners may have partially obstructed views of the historic Green Ridge Cemetery to the west or Lake Michigan to the east, though most look out at their neighbors’ small, tidy yards, gardens and detached garages. “They're mostly from the 1920s and ‘30s, but there are even some that come up that are from the 1800s,” Hua says. Some need a few renovations upon move-in, though “There’s a fair number of freshly renovated ones that hit the market,” she says. Bungalows and folk-styles can be found throughout the area, while colonial-styles and Tudor Revivals are concentrated at the center or along the shoreline. Most homes range from about $200,000 to $700,000 depending on size, the number of repairs needed and proximity to the lake.

Lake Michigan recreation and downtown Kenosha museums
Southport Park is a waterfront access point less than a mile from Allendale homes, anchored by the art deco Southport Beach House, a historic WPA-era project. Residents can rent the facility for events. Heading north along the shoreline leads to Eichelman Park’s walking paths, playground and swimming hole, along with the neighboring flower garden and event venue at Wolfenbüttel Park. Boats moor close to downtown at Kenosha Marina, which is surrounded by a walking path and flanked by the Kenosha Public Museum and Civil War Museum. Lincoln Park is another option less than a mile away across Route 32 with a disc golf course, pond-centered walking trails and batting cages.

Taking the 2 bus from Allendale to other Kenosha staples
“[Kenosha] is like a big, small town, the perfect location between Milwaukee and Chicago,” says Aaron Kohlmeier, broker-owner at Welcome Home Real Estate Group and lifelong resident. The former is 35 miles away on Wisconsin Highway 31, while the latter is 65 miles away on the Interstate 94 toll road. The Kenosha Train Station is 1.5 miles away from Allendale and part the Union Pacific North line for an hour and 45-minute ride to the Windy City. Public transit options close to home include Route 2 of the Kenosha Area Transit bus system, which passes through Allendale on 5th Avenue, 7th Avenue and 65th Street. The regular shuttles stop at the main transfer center downtown, Froedtert South- Kenosha Urgent Care Center, Kenosha HarborMarket and other hotspots farther from the shoreline. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is the closest large-scale terminal, 34 miles north.
Downtown Kenosha, Sheridan Road convenience and farther
Chain restaurants, drive-throughs and a Walgreens pharmacy line Sheridan Road, the main north-south thoroughfare running west of Allendale. Downtown Kenosha is both the most walkable area of the city and a hub for its locally owned businesses; a morning cup of coffee at The Buzz Café or a beer flight at Rustic Roads Brewing Company are less than a mile away for Allendale residents. Frank's Diner has packed a full house since six horses dragged the diner car to its downtown location in 1926. The restaurant has appeared in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, The New York Times and other publications. Besides the weekly Kenosha HarborMarket, Festival Foods is 2 miles away from Allendale for groceries, and Southport Plaza has big box retailers like Michael’s and Meijer alongside the Cinemark Tinseltown USA Kenosha theater.

Recent KUSD closures and zoned schools for Allendale students
Kids living on the northern end of Allendale are zoned for Brass Community School for prekindergarten through fifth grade, which scores a C from Niche. Other students are zoned for Southport Elementary School, which gets a C-plus. Lincoln Middle School was among several Kenosha Unified School District closures in 2024, and Allendale’s home middle schools are now Lance Middle School, which scores a C-plus, and Washington Middle School, which scores a C. Kenosha School of Technology Enhanced Curriculum—a B-scoring, pre-K through eighth grade charter option with a STEM focus—moved both its east and west campus to the former Lincoln building. Parents enter a lottery in winter for the following school year to attend this and other charter schools in the district. Tremper High School, which gets a B, is home to the largest student-run blood drive in Wisconsin. Run by the student government, the event takes the full year to plan and accumulates hundreds of pints of blood for those in need every year. Tremper is also the national record holder for student-led blood drives since 2016.
Lance Middle School gets its namesake from Gilbert Lance, a Kenosha hero.

A short distance to Kenosha HarborMarket and other key events
Proximity to the lakefront also means proximity to Kenosha events. Music floats from the south lawn of Anderson Art Center, a family estate-turned-community resource, each summer during the free Music at Twilight Concert Series. “At Christmas the Kemper Center has an annual tree event where companies donate trees and there’s a decorating contest,” Hua says. “Down at the lakefront there’s more and more events every year. They have Taste of Kenosha, and Kenosha Tall Ships where these huge ships come into the harbor.” The parade of billowing sails harkens back to ship designs used in the 1800s during Great Lakes expeditions. Kenosha HarborMarket sets up vendor stalls on Saturdays throughout the year—at the Marina in the warmer months and the Kenosha Woman’s Club in the winter.
The Kenosha HarborMarket is located on 2nd Ave, between 54th and 56th streets.
Music at Twilight Concert Series is a summer event appreciated by Kenosha locals.
