Taking its name from the technical college at its center, Gateway is a small section of Kenosha with only a couple of residential streets and apartment complexes around the college campus, a local high school and a small corridor of medical offices and commercial service providers. “It’s a nice, quiet part of town,” says Tony Bitar, a Realtor with eXp Realty. A lifelong Kenosha resident, Bitar has lived just east of Gateway for 7 years and has sold homes in town for more than a decade. “A lot of people are surprised when they take a look at Kenosha and find out how convenient it is, especially getting to Milwaukee or Chicago. It’s a nice balance of that small-town spirit with a little big-town flair.”
Public schools and Gateway Technical College
Flexible career tracks are a key part of the appeal at Gateway Technical College, which offers a mix of technical diploma, associate degree and transfer prep programs for adult learners. "We have the gamut of students, from those right out of high school, all the way to people who are married with families. I think our campus is a hub of the community in a way," says Lee Colony, manager of communications and media relations for the college. The school earns a B-plus grade on Niche. The college has credit transfer agreements with more than 160 colleges and universities, including Carthage College, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Public school students in the Gateway area start their learning journeys at Harvey Elementary School. The school has a 15:1 student-teacher ratio and holds a B grade on Niche. Bullen Middle School earns a C grade. Students at Bradford High School, which is next to the college campus, can earn early college credit through the school’s dual enrollment program; participating schools include Gateway Technical College, University of Wisconsin–Parkside, Carthage College and Herzing University. The high school earns a B-minus grade on Niche.
Bradford High School offers AP courses.

Celebrating Earth Day on the Gateway campus
Campus events at Gateway Technical College are open to the public and serve as a key connection between the neighborhood and the school. Annual events include Halloween trunk or treats, the Holiday Gifting & Art Fair and Celebrate Earth Day. "It's the largest Earth Day-related event in southeastern Wisconsin," Colony says. "There are a lot of different hands-on activities about being more environmental, more green." Another notable annual event is the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, where keynote speakers are invited to speak to the community. The school’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award is also presented to local honorees working for equality, social justice and the common good during the event.
Ranch-style homes and side-by-side duplexes
The neighborhood’s educational focus and large apartment market limit Gateway’s homebuying selections. Most homes in the neighborhood are concentrated east of 30th Avenue, with ranch-style homes and duplexes sitting in formation on suburban lanes. Both home types share a new traditional style, with most homes being built between the late 1960s and 1990s. There have been no sales recorded in the last year, but estimated home values average $300,000, which is significantly lower than the typical cost in the Chicago metro area.

Shagbark Recreation Area and the Kenosha County Bike Trail
Close to the center of the neighborhood, the Shagbark Recreation Area is a 48-acre park overlooking the waters of Pike Creek. The city of Kenosha started a wetland restoration project for the area in mid-2024 to improve the area’s stormwater runoff and reintroduce plants and wildlife to the area. About 1 mile north, St. Peter’s Park is a go-to choice for winter recreation thanks to a popular sledding hill. In the summertime, folks can stop by for bass and bluegill fishing on the small pond.
Recreation options on the neighborhood’s east side include the Kenosha County Bike Trail, a cyclist- and pedestrian-friendly trail that runs for more than 3 miles north. Formerly a railroad track, travelers can follow the trail all the way to Racine. Matoska Park tucks a playground and a small baseball backstop between rows of homes just outside of the neighborhood, close to the area’s single-family homes.

For most residents, everyday shopping options close to home include a Dollar General store just south of the area on Washington Road and a Pick ‘n Save north of the neighborhood near Wood Road. To the south, gently used home décor, clothing, and media are some of the offerings at Nifty Thrifty Resale Shop, a consignment store benefitting local nonprofit Women and Children’s Horizons. For more big-box shopping nearby, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Festival Foods are each about 2 miles west near Green Bay Road.
Daytime dining selections in the area include Gateway Café, a cozy family restaurant serving brunch with a sizable selection of pie for dessert, and Nafi’s Springwood Restaurant, where menu fixtures include eggs benedict and gyro platters. For dinner, folks can dine in or get delivery from Fireside Restaurant & Lounge, a pizza restaurant where a major part of the décor is an indoor fire pit.
