Traditional architecture surrounding 32nd Division Memorial Highway
32nd Division Memorial Highway cuts through the heart of Lakeshore, with short residential streets diverging east and west at every block. Those to the east stop just shy of Lake Michigan’s rocky shoreline, where homes yield expansive water views. Those to the west extend to the train tracks, where passengers of the Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee Commuter Rail will pass 30 times each day—twice for each round-trip. Regardless, traditional architecture is typical. Cape Cods, bungalows and ranch-style homes line each avenue, ranging in price from $105,000 to $365,000. Old-growth trees shade their modest gardens and driveways with basketball hoops out front. Homebuyers won’t find sidewalks but rather narrow gravel walkways at the end of each lawn. The occasional custom build might exceed 3,000 square feet and range between $800,000 and $850,000, though these homes are rare. More common are waterfront condos, particularly those on Lakeshore Drive, offering units for $350,000 to $515,000.The stony beaches of Alford Park
From the stony beaches of Alford Park, guests can catch views of the Kenosha wharf and lighthouse. In the Lake Michigan tides are sea glass hunters, fishermen and families swimming in the waves. Atop the bluffs, the scenic Pike Bike Trail runs through the park on the way south. To the west, Sam Poerio Park offers a more traditional recreation scene next door to the Bose Elementary School campus. There, baseball diamonds and playgrounds are connected by shaded walking paths weaving between them. Lakeshore residents head to Seventh Place Overlook Park for a more intimate view of the water. The quiet lookout spot extends from 7th Place, an unmarked walkway stretching out onto the neighborhood’s rocky bluffs.100 years of enrichment at Washington Middle School
In the fall, students attend the Kenosha Unified School District, beginning at Bose Elementary with a C-plus on Niche. Washington Middle School earns a C, a 100-year-old institution oriented around enrichment. From Spring trips to Madison and Washington D.C. to camping trips, Saturday School and an array of fine art and athletic programs, Washington aims to prepare students for life at Bradford High School. With a B-minus on Niche, Bradford competes in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division 1 league. The school is a long-time rival of Tremper High in western Kenosha. Carthage College is situated less than a mile south of most homes, a private Lutheran school only enrolling about 2,500 students each year.Celebrate America’s lakefront fireworks
Situated 6 miles north of Downtown Kenosha, Lakeshore residents are well-positioned to partake in the city’s various annual events, likely packed with familiar faces. Residents gather along the lakefront for fireworks and live music every Independence Day as part of the city’s Celebrate America festival. Meanwhile, regional and national jazz musicians perform at Celebration Place for the HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm & Blues Festival in August. Wisconsin winters are made bearable with the Snow Daze Festival. A 32-foot by 60-foot outdoor ice rink at Veterans Memorial Park is the main attraction, with ice sculptures in front of many downtown shops and eateries.Kenosha Area Transit bus stops surrounding Carthage College
Residents of Lakeshore are primarily car-dependent, as Kenosha Area Transit bus stops are primarily located farther south toward Carthage College. Those seeking a ride can find stops on Campus Drive, Sheridan Road and 15th Avenue, where routes head 6 miles south into Downtown Kenosha. Alternatively, residents can ride the bike lanes on 12th Street out west to Petrifying Springs or take the Pike Bike Trail south to Simmons Island. The nearest emergency room is Froedtert South Kenosha Urgent Care Center, 5 miles south. Though Chicago remains a 70-mile commute, residents can take the Metra from the Kenosha station downtown. Similarly, the 38-mile commute to Milwaukee is made easy by the Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee Commuter Rail departing from the same station. Those traveling out of state typically fly out of General Mitchell International Airport, 30 miles north.A midcentury ambiance and lakeside views at HOBNOB supper club
The HOBNOB supper club has been open since 1954 on 32nd Division Memorial Highway. Over the years, the owners have managed to maintain its midcentury façade with art deco inspired décor and an outdoor patio overlooking the grandeur of the great lake next door. Farther south, Waterfront Warehouse serves classic American fare in the form of BBQ wings and sweet potato fries with cold beer on draft. Edison bulbs glow overhead, contributing to the restaurant’s warehouse-style theme. As for the essentials, residents typically hit the Pick ‘n Save on 18th Street or Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly on 15th. Closer to Downtown Kenosha, Big Star Drive-In is a retro summertime drive-in. “The downtown area has boutiques, wine shops, great restaurants and go-to ice cream parlors by the water,” Welker says, and Big Star is no exception. The veteran-owned greasy spoon slings burgers and shakes, a go-to for catching a midwestern sunset through the windshield.
