Three miles from access to Lake Michigan and a waterfront nature preserve, the Red Arrow neighborhood is 4 miles south of downtown Kenosha and about 5 miles north of the Illinois border between Chicago and Milwaukee. “People like this neighborhood because it’s walking distance to the water,” says Melissa Roach-Zievers, a broker associate with Re/Max Elite. “The nearest public beach is 3 miles north, so it’s a little further.” Although 60 miles north of Chicago, downtown Kenosha is the northernmost stop on the Metra commuter rail line heading into downtown Chicago. “There are quite a few people who live here who commute downtown,” she says. The train goes to Ogilvie Transportation Center, and it’s an hour-and-a-half ride.
Anderson Park has multiple forms of recreation
Anderson Park caters to those who want to cast a line into the water, learn to skateboard or exercise with their dog. K-9 Korner Dog Park has a separate fenced-in area for small and large breeds to frolic. There is no fee to use the dog park, but owners need to clean up after their four-legged friends. The skatepark is open from dawn to dusk with half-pipes and stair rails. There are two ponds where fishing is allowed and an outdoor pool open during the summer. On the west side of Anderson Park on 89th Street is the northern part of the Kenosha County Bike Trail, which goes south to the Illinois state line, changes its name to the Robert McClory Bike Path, and continues into northern Illinois. Red Arrow Park has a softball field and a small playground at the corner of 84th Place and 17th Avenue. Close to the lake, at the northern end of the Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area, is the Kenosha Sand Dunes, an ideal spot to view Lake Michigan and more than 75 species of birds. A 2-mile trail goes through the area and is open throughout the year.
Housing from the 1950s on in Red Arrow
Slightly more than half of the people living in Red Arrow are homeowners. The neighborhood has several apartments and plenty of single-family homes, mainly ranch-style bungalows and Cape Cods priced between $200,000 and $350,000, primarily built in the 1960s and ‘70s. Houses are close together on quarter-acre lots with sidewalks on both sides of the street. Condos and multi-family units range from $175,000 to $250,000. Houses of worship in the neighborhood include St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Fellowship Baptist Church, First Presbyterian and the non-denominational Well Church. The CAP crime score index for the neighborhood is a 4, right at the national average. However, some violent crimes are rated slightly above the national average in Red Arrow.
The industrial section of Red Arrow
Kenosha has a long history of being an industrial city. Although most of that industry has left, some buildings remain on Sheridan Road in the neighborhood’s southern section, along the Sheridan Road corridor, the community’s main north-south thoroughfare. Visko Teepak is a food products supplier with 100 employees. POP Manufacturing creates wood displays and store fixtures, and Ligum North America is an industrial equipment supplier. The neighborhood is also home to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Job Center.
Kenosha Unified School District
Children in the Red Arrow neighborhood attend schools in the Kenosha Unified School District, which is rated a B on Niche. Ruth Harman Academy is a K-8 choice school, meaning that students from around the Kenosha area attend the school and are chosen through a lottery. However, that process is not weighted to give those who live closer an advantage. The school does not have a Niche grade. Other schools are Grewenow Elementary, a K-5 school rated a C-plus. Lance Middle School gets a C-plus, and Tremper High School is close to the neighborhood and gets a B-minus.
Feasting like royalty at Burrito Taco King
North of the neighborhood on 22nd Avenue is Burrito Taco King, which serves Mexican food in a diner atmosphere or on the go via its drive-thru service. Fast-food chain Culver’s is located on Sheridan Road, and Final Inning is a small bar and restaurant with a dart board and pool table inside and horseshoe pits outside. Groceries can be picked up at Festival Foods, about 2 miles west on 80th Street.
Red Arrow is a car-dependent neighborhood
Although plenty of sidewalks are in the neighborhood, a car is needed to get around outside Red Arrow. The Blue and Brown Lines of Kenosha Area Transit run on Sheridan Road, with routes going north into downtown. Those lines continue to have stops on 85th Street and 22nd Avenue. Kenosha Area Transit also has a streetcar line connecting the Metra station in downtown Kenosha with several parks about 4 miles north. The nearest major airport is Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, 37 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
