The fourth most populated city in Wisconsin, Kenosha is home to about 100,000 residents. More than five times that number live in Milwaukee, about 35 miles north. In a city that’s undergoing a $400-million-plus revitalization plan, residents have a lot to look forward to. St Joes is a small part of the city where St. Joseph Catholic Academy is located. It’s similar to other nearby neighborhoods in that it’s primarily residential, with streets in a grid layout.

“There’s mainly older housing stock; many were built between 1920 and 1950,” Steve Bostrom, broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Epic Real Estate, says. A home with less than 1,000 square feet might sell for under $100,000, and one with at least twice the space for up to $350,000. Lots are situated fairly close together and not set back very far from the curb.

Kids may attend public schools like Roosevelt Elementary, graded B by Niche; Lincoln Middle, graded C; and Tremper High, graded B-minus. There also are private education facilities, including St. Joseph Catholic Academy, which has an A-minus grade from Niche, and serves all levels. Neighbors of the school might stroll over to swap books at the Little Free Library by the middle school entrance. Events like the winter and spring musicals, the Mardi Gras Gala, the First Responder’s Breakfast and a fundraising auction with food and entertainment are open to the community. Each year, the academy is the site of the Miss Kenosha Scholarship Competition, a local division of Miss America which provides opportunities for young women. Another private education option, Kenosha Montessori School, has a primary program for preschool and kindergarten and an elementary program for first through sixth grades.

There are lots of outdoor spaces for residents of Kenosha. A highlight is 45-acre Lincoln Park, within walking distance for many St Joes residents. According to Bostrom, it’s a popular spot for summer concerts. These events are facilitated by the Mahone Fund, which honors the legacy of Mary Lou and Arthur Freeman Mahone, locals known for social justice work. “The foundation raises funds to support education for underprivileged students,” Bostrom says. Space for baseball, soccer and disc golf brings many a sports lover to the park. Bostrom says area schools practice here, and it’s a site used for tournaments. For the older set, Kenosha Senior Center provides lunchtime meals, classes, a nutrition program and monthly dances.

Plenty of shops and restaurants are found about 2 miles away in the downtown area, set alongside Lake Michigan. Close to home, Crispy’s Tavern has a true bar-on-the-corner quality. Regulars gather for pool or to get their practice in for the Kenosha Darts Classic tournament, or KDC. The tavern hosts events like a Friendsgiving Potluck, a Day of the Dead celebration and other seasonal gatherings. Recognizable by its vintage neon sign, The Spot Drive-In, in business since 1945, is the place for burgers and homemade root beer anytime from 11 a.m. until they close at 2 a.m. And even if it’s past 2 a.m., grocery shopping might be in order. Festival Foods isn’t far, and it’s open 24 hours.

Though Milwaukee is closer, Kenosha is considered a part of the greater Chicago area; Chi-town is only about 60 miles away. Those living in St Joes can use state routes 31, 32 and 50 to reach their destinations. Public transportation includes Kenosha Area Transit buses, and there’s an electric streetcar route that goes along downtown and Lake Michigan. One of the stops is at Kenosha Station, the lone Metra station outside Illinois.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
