Walking distance to recreation by Lake Michigan
Located between downtown Kenosha and the city’s lakefront sand dunes, Southport is a predominantly residential community where residents can easily stroll to a quiet sand-and-stone beach along Lake Michigan. While the neighborhood’s namesake park is relatively small compared to the rest of the city's lakefront amenities, Kenosha’s small-city feel makes all the rest feel close to home. “The lake in Kenosha is amazing,” says Lou Ann Pitts, a Realtor with Bear Realty. “There are 7 miles of bike trails, and the beaches have free admission and parking.”

Southport Park and the historic Beach House
Southport Park and Lake Michigan serve as the neighborhood’s eastern border. One of the park’s centerpieces is the 1930s building on the lakefront at the end of the loop on 3rd Avenue. The Southport Beach House was built as part of a New Deal program during the Great Depression. Construction costs were cut as it was built using materials from condemned buildings. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. The park also has a bike, walking path, play area and beach access. However, the beaches are not staffed with lifeguards. South along the shore is the Kenosha Sand Dunes, the northern part of the Chiwaukee Prairie Natural Area, open throughout the year with trails and bird-watching opportunities. Kenosha’s wastewater treatment facility is between Southport Park and the Kenosha Dunes. In the past 5 to 10 years, the facility has been recognized for improving its treatment after residents complained of odors.

Solidly built homes in Southport
The houses in Southport point to a time in Kenosha’s past. “Kenosha used to be a big manufacturing city with auto plants. There are some blocks where the houses were built for the auto workers, especially the ranch homes with the detached garages,” Pitts says. But there are also 1920s bungalows and Cape Cods. Prices range from $200,000 to $400,000. The houses also come from a time when they were solidly built. “I was in a house recently built in the 1950s that had a concrete wall when it’s usually built with block,” she adds. Some homes are showing their age and are going through renovations in Southport. Houses along 2nd Avenue with a view of the lake are priced between $400,000 and $800,000. The neighborhood is rated a 2 on the CAP crime score index, lower than the 4 national average.

Southport Elementary School
The Kenosha Unified School District recently went through the process of closing down several schools to cut costs. Southport Elementary, located in the neighborhood, was not one of those. The school gets a C-plus rating on Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Before the 2024-25 school year, students would have attended Lincoln Middle, but that was shut down, and now public school students go to Lance Middle, which is also rated a C-plus. Tremper High School gets a B-minus. The school has a long-standing athletic rivalry with Bradford High School. The two schools have met since the 1960s and are only 4 miles apart.

Frank’s Diner has been around since 1926, making it the longest-running diner in the United States. It’s hard to miss on 58th Street since it’s in a former railcar.
