Washington has industrial roots and is between two major cities
The Washington neighborhood in Kenosha sits between two major metropolitans, Chicago and Milwaukee, located just off Lake Michigan. “Kenosha has seen a lot of growth,” says Aaron Kohlmeier, with Welcome Home Real Estate Group, who has more than 15 years of experience selling in the area. “It used to be a car manufacturing town but has seen a lot of development.”
Houses from the middle of the 1900s are home to close-knit neighbors
Many of the homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1950s and sell for usually around $200,000 to $250,000. You will find older ranch-style and bungalow homes, many of which have backyards big enough to host a few guests. “It is a good community; everyone is neighborly,” says Kohlmeier. “Everyone turns out for Halloween, even when it snows.” It is a car-dependent neighborhood, so expect to run errands and travel via car. Additionally, there are some local buses and even a train that goes to Chicago.
Schools have family nights, sport options and a great theater program
Students can start school at Jefferson Elementary School, which has a C grade from Niche. The school offers a variety of after-school activities, including family card night and family math night. The next stop on their educational journeys is Washington Middle School, which earns a C and is named in honor of former President George Washington and founded in 1919. Teenagers can attend Reuther Central High School, which receives a B-minus. The school offers various sports and club options and has a prominent music and theater department. In fact, the Kenosha School District is known for its music and theater departments. “The schools are often the first to do the Broadway shows here on a local level,” Kohlmeier says. “They are nationally known and have sent a few people to Broadway.”
Bikers, athletes and picnickers have outlets close to home
There are many green spaces in the area, with Washington Park being the most popular, housing more than 27 acres of green space and walking trails, plus a skatepark for skateboarders and bikers. In fact, bikers get to enjoy the Washington Park Velodrome, which is also the oldest operating velodrome in the country. You will also find basketball, tennis courts, picnic areas, a playground and hills for sledding in the winter. Washington Park Municipal Golf Course is one of the primary attractions, which is the only public golf course in Kenosha.
Chain grocers, local markets and diverse restaurants are nearby
For shopping needs, Festival Foods is a supermarket chain many residents go to for produce and pantry goods. The deli also has prepared food, so you can stop there for a quick lunch. Harbor Market is a mainstay, every Saturday, both in the spring and summer months. Several farmers bring fresh food near the lakefront, local restaurants sell food items, and various vendors set up booths to sell their goods. Other options in the area include Fonte Food Market, Quality Food and San Luis Grocery Store. Big Star is a popular local drive-in restaurant known for its burgers, fries and shakes. The Spot is another local drive-in burger restaurant, and the two have been mainstays in the community for many years. “Big Star is like a landmark,” Kohlmeier says. “If you come here, you must go to one of those two.” Other local dining options include Curry King Indian Chicken, 24’s Rumors Lounge for a bar and grille and Canton Michoacano for Mexican food.
